DIFFERENT LEADERSHIP APPROACHES
USED BY CORPORATE WORLD
 “Leadership is the art of leading others to
deliberately create a result that wouldn’t have
happened otherwise.”
 Good leaders are able to deliberately create
challenging results by enlisting the help of
others.
 It’s not just the creation of results that makes
good leadership.
 They can single handedly turn failing
companies into Fortune 500 organizations.
 They can change company cultures. Good
leadership is an essential key to corporate
success.
Leadership, as a process,
 shapes the goals of a group or organization,
 motivates behavior toward the achievement of
those goals,
 helps define group or organizational culture. It
is primarily a process of influence.
LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT
leader innovates manager administers
leader develops manager maintains
leader’s focus is on people manager focuses on systems
and structures
leader inspires trust manager relies on control
leader has an eye on the horizon manager keeps an eye on the
bottom line
leader does the right thing manager does things right
If we examine the term leadership more
minutely, it will be found that it has the
following implications:
 Leadership involves other people. In the
absence of followers or employees, the whole
idea of leadership does not make any sense.
 Leadership involves an unequal distribution of
power between leaders and other group
members.

 Leadership is related to someone’s ability to
motivate others and managing interpersonal
behavior.
 It relies heavily on the process of effective
communication.
 Leadership is important in attempting to
reduce employee dissatisfaction.
 Good leadership also involves the effective
delegation of power and authority
 leadership is a dynamic process involving
changes in the leader-follower relationship.
The subject of leadership is so vast and
perceived to be so critical, it has generated a
huge body of literature. Each researcher
working in the field has tried to explain
leadership from a different perspective.
Broadly, there are four distinct approaches to
leadership

† Behavioral approach
† Situational approach
† Charismatic approach
