Subject: Tech.pgh | Without 5G, Forget The Robot Cars
Reply-To: techpgh@post-gazette.com
In today's issue: Today'stechnologies need 5G wireless speeds to reach their full capabilities + the great
fork or spoon debate of 2018 + learning about engineering on the family farm + this week's Tech
Adventures + more
5G is the next tech frontier, says John Donovan, head
of AT&T Communications
2. (Andrew Stein/Post-Gazette)
Even though 4GLTE is quick enough for youto download a movie pretty seamlessly, the decreasedlag
time (or latency)that 5G offerscouldmean the difference between an effective network of self-drivingcars
or a bunch of robot vehicleswith slowed reflexes.
TLDR: On an average business day, AT&T carries 222 petabytes of data traffic (one petabyte
is about four times the size of the Library of Congress).
Fork or spoon? Brands use social media to engage
with customers online
A socialmedia campaign about whether to use a fork or a spoon with macaroni and cheese might seem
pretty innocuous, but it's how companies like Kraft Heinz hope to boost the “talkability," of its brands
online.
3. TLDR: While some topics might be outside the margins of a brand’s image, experts think
there's equal risk in sitting on the sidelines.
Learning engineering basics
on the family farm
Long before she earned a doctorate degree in chemicalengineering at Carnegie Mellon University, Rebecca
Liebert was picking up engineering skills while helping out on her family’s farm in eastern Kentucky.
TLDR: Repairs for electric fences introduced her to electrical engineering. Surveying the
fields were an intro to civil engineering.
