well as day-to-day management. Along with his wife, Hilt
Tatum IV is actively involved in local and international

Although Panama has seen strong economic growth,
more than a quarter of the population is poor. Poverty is
especially rampant in rural areas, where nearly 50
percent of the population is poor and just under 25
percent live in extreme poverty.

3. Poverty in Panama
 These rates are even higher among the indigenous
people. In more recent years, migration from rural
areas to cities has led to an increase in urban
poverty.
The poorest populations include small subsistence
farmers, landless and rural laborers, indigenous
peoples, and households headed by women. The
poverty is caused by the inequalities created by an
urban, service-oriented economy that does not
benefit people living in rural areas, who suffer from
lack of assets and low quality of life.
