Mukund R. Patel, PhD, PE, is a tenured full professor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings
Point, NY where he began teaching in 1997. He holds a BE, ME, and PhD degree in electrical power from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He has published 50 research papers and two books“Shipboard
Electrical Power Systems”and“Shipboard Propulsion, Power Electronics and Ocean Energy,”both published
by CRC Press. From 1967 to 1997, he worked in companies such as GE (Principal Engineer), Westinghouse
Research Center (Fellow Engineer), Lockheed Martin Space Division (Senior Staff Engineer) and Siemens
(Development Manager). He has taught 1-day and 3-day courses in electrical power at GE, IEEE, NASA and
several corporations.
Dr. Patel is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (UK), Senior Life Member of IEEE, Associate
Fellow of AIAA, Associate Editor of Solar Energy Journal. He is a Professional Electrical Engineer in
Pennsylvania and Charter Mechanical Engineer in UK.

Electrical Power Basics
Alexandria, VA · December 12 · 800-1200
Electrical Power Basics provides an overview of shipboard electrical power systems and electrical
machines in a simplified manner suitable for all engineers and managers interested in electrical
power. This course will cover traditional as well as new and emerging electrical equipment in the
marine industry. Although the content will focus around shipboard systems, the course will be
useful to a wide variety of professionals working wherever electrical power is use e.g. on ships,
shipyards, inland factories, or offshore and far-shore installations (oil and gas rigs, wind energy
farms, etc.)
Intro to Power Electronics
Alexandria, VA · December 12 · 1300-1700
No other technology has brought a greater change in the electrical power industry than the
power electronics that have been developed over the last few decades. Power electronics
improve energy efficiency and provide flexibility in operation. For that reason, power electronics
dominate electric propulsion equipment in ships with electrical power plant approaching 100
megawatts. Intro to Power Electronics will be useful to a wide variety of professionals working
wherever electrical power is used or generated e.g. on ships, shipyards, inland factories, or
offshore and far-shore renewable power plants extracting energy from the marine currents and
the ocean winds.
