2. Pop
It’s a genre of popular music that had its origin in the late 1950s as a derivation of traditional pop, in
combination with other musical genres that were in fashion at that time. The terms pop music and
popular music are often used interchangeably, although the latter has a broader meaning in
accommodating other genres other than pop that are considered popular.

3. Definition
It is a certain type of light and popular music derived from black
musical styles and British folk music

4. Influences and development
 Throughout its existence, pop music has absorbed
influences from most other genres of popular music.

5. Characteristics
 The main element of pop music is the song, often between
three and five minutes long, generally marked by a constant
and remarkable rhythmic element, a style akin to the
mainstream, and a traditional and simple structure.

6. Criticism
 In the opinion of British rock critic and sociologist Simon
Frith, pop music is produced "as a matter of company, not
art ... it is designed to appeal to the whole world" and "does
not come from anywhere in particular or marks any
particular taste ». It is not "driven by any significant ambition,
except profit and commercial reward ... and in musical terms,
it is essentially conservative“.
