5. The creation of the term hip hop is often
credited to Keith Cowboy, rapper with
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
However, Lovebug Starski, Keith Cowboy, and
DJ Hollywood used the term when the music
was still known as disco rap. It is believed that
Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend
who had just joined the U.S. Army, by scat
singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way
that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of soldiers
marching Cowboy later worked the "hip hop"
cadence into a part of his stage performance,
which was quickly used by other artists such as
The Sugarhill Gang in "Rapper's Delight".
Universal Zulu Nation founder Afrika Bambaataa
is credited with first using the term to describe
the subculture in which the music belonged;
although it is also suggested that it was a
derogatory term to describe the type of music.[
The first use of the term in print was in The
Village Voice, by Steven Hager, later author of a
1984 history of hip hop. 1970s

rooted in the traditions of Western culture,
including both liturgical (religious) and
secular music. While a more precise term is
also used to refer to the period from 1750
to 1820 (the Classical period), this article is
about the broad span of time from before
the 6th century AD to the present day,
which includes the Classical period and
various other periods The central norms of
this tradition became codified between
1550 and 1900, which is known as the
common-practice period. The major time
divisions of Western art music are as

9. Minimalism
In visual arts, music, and other mediums, minimalism is an art movement that began in
post–World War II Western art, most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s and
early 1970s. Prominent artists associated with minimalism include Donald Judd, John
McCracken, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt, and Frank Stella It
derives from the reductive aspects of modernism and is often interpreted as a reaction
against abstract expressionism and a bridge to postminimal art practices. Minimalism in
music often features repetition and iteration such as those of the compositions of La
Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Julius Eastman, and John Adams.
The term minimalist often colloquially refers to anything that is spare or stripped to its
essentials. It has accordingly been used to describe the plays and novels of Samuel
Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and the automobile
designs of Colin Chapman.
10. Aleatoric Music
Aleatoric music (also aleatory music or chance music; from the Latin word alea,
meaning "dice") is music in which some element of the composition is left to chance,
and/or some primary element of a composed work's realization is left to the
determination of its performer(s). The term is most often associated with procedures in
which the chance element involves a relatively limited number of possibilities. The term
became known to European composers through lectures by acoustician Werner Meyer-
Eppler at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music in the beginning
of the 1950s. According to his definition, “a process is said to be aleatoric […] if its
course is determined in general but depends on chance in detail” (Meyer-Eppler 1957,
55). Through a confusion of Meyer-Eppler's German terms Aleatorik (noun) and
aleatorisch (adjective), his translator created a new English word, "aleatoric" (rather than
using the existing English adjective "aleatory"), which quickly became fashionable and
has persisted (Jacobs 1966). More recently, the variant "aleatoriality" has been
introduced (Roig-Francolí 2008, 340).
11. Avant Garde music
Avant-garde music is music that is considered
to be at the forefront of experimentation or
innovation in its field, with the term "avant-
garde" implying a critique of existing aesthetic
conventions, rejection of the status quo in favor
of unique or original elements, and the idea of
deliberately challenging or alienating audiences
