Access to the internet
 In 2017 89% of Irish households have access to the internet
at home (CSO, 2017).
 International internet broadband grew worldwide by 32%
between 2015 and 2016 (ITU, 2017).
 In 2014 average internet speeds worldwide were under
4Mbps and by the end of 2015 average internet speed was
5.1 Mbps. By the start of 2017 this stood at 7.2 Mbps
(Statista.com, 2017).

 2016: average number of connected device is 3.64
(Smartinsights.com, 2016)
 66% of Americans own at least two digital devices:
smartphone, laptop or desktop computer or tablet. 36% of all
Americans own all three (Pew Research Centre, 2015)
 18% American adults only own one device, 16% do not have
any of the above three (Pew Research Centre, 2015)

 The average number of connected devices per consumer
was 3.64 in 2016.
 The top 25% income bracket has 4.4 connected devices.

 62% of US consumers with internet access shop online at least once a
month.
 31% expect to spend more on online shopping than they did in the
previous month.
 Time spent on retail sites by device: 49% PC, 37% smartphone and
14% tablet.
 The most purchased products online: 69% electronics, 67% books,
63% clothing apparel, 38% household goods and 30% office supplies.

What consumers buy online
Online video consumption
 Over 500 million people are watching video on Facebook
every year.
 Internet video traffic will be over 80% of all consumer traffic in
4 years.
 Almost 50% of internet users look for videos related to a
product or service before visiting a store. (McCue, 2017)
Consumer trends
 Online reviews impact 67% of respondents purchasing
decision.
 28% of all online activity is spent on social networks.
 Growth in video consumption. (Ervin, 2016)
 Globalization of brands is creating a homogenised global
culture. (Vessels, 2016)
Consumer trends
 62% of consumers with internet access now shop online at
least once a month.
 80% of consumers more likely to shop online if offered free
shipping.
 36% of shoppers spend time to find sites that sell their
product at the lowest price. (Saleh, 2017)
Summary
 The rate that consumers have access to digital devices and to high
speed internet is increasing year on year, especially in developing
countries.
 This increase has led to an increase in online shopping and has led to
consumer trends including increased reliability on peer reviews and
online offers like coupons and free shipping.
 Online shopping is increasing in popularity and as we can see in the
previous slide more people who currently shop online plan on
increasing the amount they shop online.

Access to the internet  In 2017 89% of Irish households have access to the internet at home (CSO, 2017).  International internet broadband grew worldwide by 32% between 2015 and 2016 (ITU, 2017).  In 2014 average internet speeds worldwide were under 4Mbps and by the end of 2015 average internet speed was 5.1 Mbps. By the start of 2017 this stood at 7.2 Mbps (Statista.com, 2017).

  • 11.  62% of US consumers with internet access shop online at least once a month.  31% expect to spend more on online shopping than they did in the previous month.  Time spent on retail sites by device: 49% PC, 37% smartphone and 14% tablet.  The most purchased products online: 69% electronics, 67% books, 63% clothing apparel, 38% household goods and 30% office supplies.   • 12. Online video consumption  Over 500 million people are watching video on Facebook every year.  Internet video traffic will be over 80% of all consumer traffic in 4 years.  Almost 50% of internet users look for videos related to a product or service before visiting a store. (McCue, 2017)
  • 13. Consumer trends  Online reviews impact 67% of respondents purchasing decision.  28% of all online activity is spent on social networks.  Growth in video consumption. (Ervin, 2016)  Globalization of brands is creating a homogenised global culture. (Vessels, 2016)
  • 14. Consumer trends  62% of consumers with internet access now shop online at least once a month.  80% of consumers more likely to shop online if offered free shipping.  36% of shoppers spend time to find sites that sell their product at the lowest price. (Saleh, 2017)
  • 15. Summary  The rate that consumers have access to digital devices and to high speed internet is increasing year on year, especially in developing countries.  This increase has led to an increase in online shopping and has led to consumer trends including increased reliability on peer reviews and online offers like coupons and free shipping.  Online shopping is increasing in popularity and as we can see in the previous slide more people who currently shop online plan on increasing the amount they shop online.
