This document discusses how physical therapy can help with common pains experienced during pregnancy. It notes that many women think pregnancy pains are normal, but physical therapy can help reduce discomfort. A physical therapist specializing in pre-natal care can provide manual therapy, exercises, and postural tips to manage back pain, sciatica, headaches, and other issues. Seeing a physical therapist can help ensure the most comfortable pregnancy possible. Between 50-90% of women experience back pain during pregnancy, which physical therapy can often manage or reduce.

Pregnancy is a very exciting time in a woman’s life, and especially
with a first time pregnancy, it can also be a little scary – there are
so many changes that are experienced!
Some common problems that Physical Therapy can help with
include:
Often women think that the pains associated with pregnancy are
normal and that they need to ‘live with it’. This is not necessarily
the case!
There are many hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy
to help our bodies prepare for labour and delivery – increase
in relaxin, progesterone and estrogen to name a few changes.
Changes in these hormone levels can relax the ligaments (that
hold bones together) in the back and pelvis, often resulting in
pain.
A Physical Therapist that specializes in peri-natal care can help
you overcome some of these aches and pains, give you postural
tips and hints for decreasing pain throughout the day, provide
manual therapy and exercise programs to help reduce some of
the discomforts of pregnancy.
By seeing a Physical Therapist you will be ensuring that you have
the most comfortable and enjoyable pregnancy possible!
