1. Urinary Incontinence
As many as 80% of women will experience urinary
incontinence before the age of 75. This is a
problem that most women believe they have to
‘live with’. It is important for you to know that there
are options!
There are several types of urinary incontinence:
Stress incontinence: this is mainly described as a
loss of urine when there is pressure exerted on the
bladder such as sneezing, coughing, or lifting
heavy objects.
Urge incontinence: this is described as having a
strong urge to urinate that is triggered by several
activities or actions throughout the day which is
accompanied by leakage.
Overflow incontinence: this happens when the
bladder becomes full and there is no signal to
empty. Most people feel like they are constantly
leaking with this type.
Many people do not understand what causes
urinary incontinence. There are many factors to
consider, and things that need to be monitored in
order to treat incontinence effectively.
What can a Physical Therapist do?
Not all Physical Therapists are certified to
provide assessment and treatment of
urinary incontinence. This is an area of
study that requires further education to
become certified as a Pelvic Floor
Therapist.
Our certified therapist has been working in
Women’s Health successfully treating
urinary incontinence since 2011. Through
clinical experience she has noticed that
as much as 80% of women were
completing Kegel exercises (pelvic floor
contraction) incorrectly, and in some
cases not using the pelvic floor muscles at
all!
By talking to a Certified Pelvic Floor
Therapist you are more likely to have
positive results treating your urinary
incontinence conservatively, by providing
you with the tools and training necessary
to ensure that you are successful, often
without surgical intervention!
