FRONT COVER ANALYSIS
1. What is the purpose of a front cover?
Entice readers to buy a magazine.

2. What is a MASTHEAD?
The name of the magazine.

3. What 3 elements will be carefully considered when producing / designing the
masthead?
Font style, colour and the name itself.

4. What can you say about these mastheads?




Bold, simple, boring. Bold, simple, little   Bold, unique, Different, bold but
                        different.            “stylish”          simple.

5. What is a TAGLINE / STRAPLINE?
Says what the magazine is about and is usually near or attached onto the
masthead.

6. Can you think of any examples of taglines for magazines?
One example of a tagline/strapline from a magazine named MyM is “Movies,
Manga, Media and More.”


7. CENTRAL IMAGE / COVER IMAGE: What are the connotations of this cover
image and which coverline does it belong to?
                       The model on this picture is a young model who will
                       relate to the young readers such as students. It’s
                       targeted for girls and has sell lines about fashion tips.
                       This belongs to the Verge coverline. The model is posed
                       in an attractive way and is wearing a blue dress. It looks
                       like something which would be classed as Formal
                       Casual. This will again, advertise towards young females.
8. What does ANCHORAGE mean? Look at the verge cover and explain how
anchorage is used to help the cover image make meaning.
Anchorage is where meanings are attached to an image through captions or
cover-lines/sell-lines. Anchorage is used on the verge cover by attaching a name
to the model.

9. What are SECONDARY IMAGES?
Promotes other features in the magazine, usually anchored by a cover-line.



                                    10. What is the purpose of a cover-line /
                                    sell-line?
                                    Examine the cover lines on the Travel
                                    magazine and explain how they work to
                                    make meaning.
                                    A cover-line is used to sell different parts of
                                    the magazine to different readers. There are
                                    usually 6-12 different cover-lines. The
                                    cover-lines on the travel magazine are
                                    advertising different holidays which can
                                    currently be taken out. Different holidays
                                    are advertised to attract different readers.




MODE OF ADDRESS: How the text speaks to the reader
11. What is meant by DIRECT MODE OF ADDRESS?
Communicate directly to the readers.

12. What is meant by INDIRECT MODE OF ADDRESS?
Formal tone, not communicating directly to the readers.

13. What are PUFFS and PUGS? Circle examples on the Cosmopolitan and Pugs cover
Puffs – promotions enhanced by shapes and colours
Pugs – “ears” of a magazine usually in the top corners. Tend to display promotion
from that edition of the magazine or the price.
14. What other important pieces of information will you find on a cover?
Barcode, Price, Edition, Banners, etc.

15. TYPEFACE
Give an example of and explain what is meant by a Serif typeface
And a Sans Serif typeface
A Serif typeface is fancier and tends to be curly. Such as this one.
A Sans Serif typeface doesn’t have these curls and tends to be simpler. Such as
this one.

16. Colour scheme: Identify the colour scheme for each student magazine
Ufouria, Canada Student, Drama Student, Honor Student, Nu Life, Verge.
