 To celebrate the 1200th birth anniversary of Muhammad bin Musa
Al-Khwarizmi, the former USSR issued this postal stamp.

The term "algorithm" is derived from the Latin
word algorism.
The word algorism is derived from Latinized
form of Al-Khwarizmi’s name “Algorismi”
(780 – 850 AD) a Muslim Persian
mathematician, astronomer, geographer and
scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad
Iraq. He is well known as the father of Algebra.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 4
 He dedicated his life to finding ways to solve
equations and problems through ordinary life as
shown in his famous book “The Compendious
Book on Calculation by Completion and
Balancing”.
 His contributions to mathematics, astronomy,
and geography were unparalleled, and they
became the landmarks in human history.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 5
 An algorithm is a set of instructions
designed to perform a specific task. This can
be a simple process, such as multiplying two
numbers, or a complex operation, such as
playing a compressed video file.
 Search engines use proprietary algorithms
to display the most relevant results from
their search index for specific queries.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 6
 Algorithms find their place in computer programs
and mechanical applications. The origin of the
term is attributed to Muslim Persian
mathematician, astronomer, and geographer Abu
Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi
(780 - 850 AD).
 His works included introducing the decimal
positioning within numeric systems to the
Western world, along with the first ever
systematic solution of linear and quadratic
equations.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 7
 In its original, rudimentary form,
algorithms, known as algorism, was
regarded as rules for computing calculations
and performing arithmetic with Hindu-
Arabic numerals. Later, with the Latin
translation of Al-Khwarizmi’s name,
algorisms set definite standards for
performing computations to execute tasks.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 8
 Wherever we use computers, we rely on
algorithms: "There are lots of types, but
algorithms, explained simply, follow a series of
instructions to solve a problem.
 It's a bit like how a recipe helps you to bake a
cake. Instead of having generic flour or a generic
oven temperature, the algorithm will try a range
of variations to produce the best cake possible
from the options and permutations available.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 9
 With the emergence and development of
Internet and big data, our daily life is increasingly
affected by algorithm.
 From listening to radios, watching movies to
shopping and socialization, almost all activities
acting on mobile media are monitored, collected
and analyzed by algorithm.
Algorithms do bring us a lot of benefits such as
providing sufficient and effective information to
users and customers, letting users receive
targeted suggestion, analyzing information, and
helping users save their time.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 10
 The invention of the zero by Al Khwarizmi and the
introduction of the Arabic numeric system
transformed the scientific and academic system into
the systems we have today.
 If it were not for these inventions, the current
academic system we enjoy would probably not be in
existence and we can only guess what the world
would look like.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 11
His contribution goes far beyond the normal
solutions in the mathematics field. His theories
gave rise to the current technological development
and in many other sectors, his invention is
fundamental. In the banking and financial sector
mathematical and algebra are inevitable.
 The current technology industries would
probably not be in existence; even if they would
exist they would not have grown to the heights it
has grown today if Al-Khwarizmi was not actively
involved in pursuing mathematical solutions of
physical and practical problems.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 12
 The relevance of his work is in creation of
computers and the creation of encryptions. In his
book, he says that after considering what
calculating was all about, he realized it was
always about numbers.
 He also realized in his research that the numbers
used in solving calculations are all divisible into
smaller units since units formed the numbers.
4/30/2020Haseeb Moheb 13
 Al Khwarizmi also wrote a significant
text on astronomy, covering calendars,
calculating the true location of the sun,
moon, and planets.
 He accomplished most of his work in the
period between 813AD and 833AD.
