Application of Mathematics in Engineering
Mathematics is one of the most important subjects. Mathematics is a subject of
numbers, shapes, data, measurements and also logical activities.
In Engineering we look for information, deduce relation and then finally come up
with a appropriate result. And this process is not possible without mathematics.
Algebra
Applications of Algebra
+ Its important for general calculations and solving equations.
+ In algebric geometry we study geometrical objects and their assortment that are used to study the
dynamic properties of robotic mechanics.
+ It is widely used in statistics control theory and geometric modelling.
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was a 9th-century Muslim mathematician and astronomer.
He is known as the “father of algebra”, a word derived from the title of his book, Kitab al-Jabr. It is
a type of mathematics in which letters and symbols are used to represent numbers.
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is one of the important branches in
the history of mathematics that deals with the
study of the relationship between the sides and
angles of a right-angled triangle.
The first known table of chords was produced by
the greek mathematicians Hipparchus. This
makes Hipparchus the founder of trigonometry.
Applications of Trigonometry
+ Civil and mechanical engineers use trigonometry to calculate torque and forces on objects,
such as bridges or building girders.
+ They also use it to find heights of elevated surfaces ,depth, angles between surfaces and so on.
+ It is used to find the components of vectors, model the mechanics of waves and oscillations
and so on.
Calculus
Even though we may not notice but calculus is all
around us. It can give us extraordinary power
over the material world by giving us the ability to
model and control systems. It was invented by sir
Issac Newton and after that Newton & Leibnitz
initiated a new era of mathematics
Application of Calculus in Engineering
o An architect Engineer uses integration to determine the amount of necessary materials to construct
curved shape constructions.
o In Engineering, Calculus (Integration) is used to determine the exact length of power cable needed
to connect two substations, which are miles away from each other.
o Integration is very much needed to calculate the centre of mass, centre of gravity.
o To calculate the velocity and trajectory of an object and predict the motion of the planets.
o Statisticians use calculus to evaluate survey data to help develop business plan for different
companies.
o A graphics artist uses calculus to determine how different 3D models will behave when subjected to
rapidly changing conditions.
o And many more…
There are many other chapters in mathematics that have some most important applications in real life
such as Statistics, Cartesian geometry, Matrices and many more
Hence despite its mystique as a complex subject, Mathematics touches our lives each day in ways to
numerous to calculate.
Thank you
