The Warner Music Group now own SubPop as the majority
shareholder, although it was founded by two independent friends.
The label is commonly associated with the grunge movement in the
late 80s, early 90s as harder rock/metal became more mainstream
and popular.
It was founded in 1986 by Bruce Pavitt
in Seattle, Washington and is still based
there today. As a medium sized
alternative rock/metal label they’ve
had major artists such as ‘Nirvana’,
‘Henry Rollins’ and even ‘Nick Cave’
signed at one point. However they also
have a diverse range of music genres
such as a comedic focus with artists
such as ‘Rick and Morty’ and ‘Flight of
the Conchords’.
The label is famous for its blunt rejection letters to aspiring artists,
beginning
with
“Dear
Loser”.
