A location manger are responsible for making sure all the practical arrangements for
locations used in shoots of any kind. They negotiate and arrange site usage, while also
having to manage the site during the shooting process. They have a range of responsibilities,
including interpreting the screenplay or storyboard to work out what kind of locations are
needed, choosing locations within budget and ensuring no disruptive noises or events
happen during the shoot.
Location scouts will then go out on locations ‘recces’. This may involve photographing or
videoing the site for further assessment. Ideally, they try to find locations close to each
other, so as not to waste time moving from place to place.
A location ‘recce’ refers to a pre-filming visit to a location to determine its suitability
for shooting, including proximity to necessary facilities and an assessment of any potential
lighting or sound issues.
A Tech Scout is also similar, it refers to finding locations that fit with the narrative or
aesthetic of the film. For example, if the filmis a period drama set in the Edwardian period,
it would be best to avoid modern, built up areas.
