Location
1. LOCATION
The locations used for a film will typically be found by a Location Scout. The job of a
location scout is to find the right environment for a particular scene, or the whole film.
They will start by reading the script which indicates what kind of locations are needed,
they may then discuss the location requirements with the director and producer in
further detail. The most crucial details that a Location Scout needs to consider are
Ambient lighting conditions, ambient sound, parking areas for the crew, sources of
electricity, and access to the site to name a few. They will then go and feed back to the
director and producer in as much detail as possible.
In some cases, a location scout may also be referred to as a Tech Scout, however, a
tech scout is also the term given to an on-location walk-through with the production's
heads of department such as director and director of photography ahead of shooting at
that particular location.
Once the location has been decided, a Location Recce must be carried out before
production goes ahead. A location recce is a visit to a location which occurs pre-filming
to determine its suitability for shooting. Possible things that may be checked on a
location recce include; checking for available access to toilets, power, transport links
and parking as well as checking for hazards and checking how much space is available.
