Purpose of Study
To explore how different personality and demographic traits
are related to one’s level of iPhone “addiction.”
Hypotheses
People with a greater need to belong, more social anxiety,
less satisfaction with life, and/or more introversion will have
greater iPhone addiction and a greater use of their device for
Entertainment and Professional/ Academic Life.
Participants
N= 75
Gender: 60% Females
Mean Age= 26.55 SD: 11.41
Ethnicity: 1.3% African American; 5.3% Asian/ Pacific
Islander, 4% Spanish/ Hispanic; 89.3% Caucasian
Mean Length of iPhone Ownership: 2.53 years; SD:1.06

Subjects responded with self-reported data; thus, there was
room for bias.
• SWLS (Ed Diener, Robert A. Emmons, Randy j. Larsen and
Sharon Griffin, 1985)
• 5 items
• 1-7 Likert scale
• Example items:
• In most ways my life is close to ideal.
• NBL (Leary, M.R. Kelly, K.M. Cottrell, C.A., and
Schreindorfer, L.S., 2007)
• 10 items
• 1-5 Likert scale
• Example items
• I want other people to accept me.
• LSAS (Leibowitz)
• 11 items
• 1-4 Likert scale indicating how much anxiety
the subject feels in each situation
• Example items
• Meeting strangers
iPhone Addiction Scale
• Developed for the purposes of this study, the IAS
measures the participant’s self reported level of
addiction to their iPhone
• 13 items
• 1-5 Likert scale
• Example Items:
• I feel addicted to my iPhone
• I would feel distressed if I were without my
iPhone for 24 hours.
• I am dependent on my iPhone for my daily
life.
Discussion
We found that subjects with a greater need to belong,
less satisfaction with life, and more social anxiety were
more “addicted” to their iPhones. These subjects also
used their iPhone most for organization and social
networking.
