1. Legend of Ang Temple
Ang Pagoda is located on Highway 53, in cluster 4, ward 8, Tra Vinh city, Tra Vinh province. Located on a
land of 4 hectares, Ang Pagoda is only 5km from the center of Tra Vinh city. Ang Pagoda is part of Ao Ba
Om campus. This temple has the full name of Angkorajaborey and is one of the most typical temples of
the system of 141 Khmer temples in Tra Vinh.
Ang Pagoda is the oldest temple in the Khmer temples. According to the legend of Ang Pagoda, the
temple was built in 990. At that time, the pagoda was mainly built of leaves and bamboo. It was not until
1842 that this place was restored with materials such as precious wood (sesame rafters and 60 pillars),
tiled roofs and walls. Later, Ang Pagoda was also restored several times on a smaller scale.
On August 25, 1994, Ang Pagoda was honored to be recognized by the state as a national historical and
cultural relic. In 2011, Ang Pagoda was once again renovated in the direction of preserving the
architecture of works such as the main hall, Sala, internal roads in the temple, library, monks...
Ang Pagoda is a typical temple of the Khmer Theravada Buddhist sect. The main hall only worships
Shakyamuni Buddha. This place is also the venue for many famous festivals in Tra Vinh. Festivals that are
well known to tourists and locals are Chol Chnam Thmay, Ok Om Bok and Dolta.
In addition to festivals, Ang Pagoda also regularly organizes courses for Khmer youth to come and study
knowledge and morality. In addition, the temple also has many religious ceremonies such as the
Buddha's birthday, the entrance ceremony, the coming-out ceremony, etc. to help preserve the unique
ethnic culture of the Khmer people.
2. Architecture of Ang . Pagoda
Ang Pagoda is located in a 4-hectare campus and has many unique architectural features of Khmer
temples. The architecture of Ang pagoda is a harmonious combination between the scenery and colorful
decorative artworks of the Khmer people.
2. The temple grounds are surrounded by a deep moat. The temple gate was built with three towers
above, decorated with many unique statues in the shape of owls, fairies, birds.. All these images have
very important meanings in Khmer culture and are sculpted. Traditionally engraved. The pagoda has a
five-top pavilion. This place keeps the remains of the abbots through many generations. Legend has it
that the first abbot was in office even before 1715.
The main hall of the temple faces east. This work is located on a platform up to 2m high and is the
largest area of the temple. The main hall consists of 12 main pillars made of perennial precious wood.
Each column is decorated with statues of birds and fairies at the top with two hands supporting the roof.
Around the main hall there are pillars, fences with the head of Bayon, in addition, there is a statue of
Yeak wearing armor with a fierce face. Each gable is closed with a triangular wooden panel delicately
carved with the image of a god wearing a tray and a sunflower. The main roof has three levels, two roofs
are higher and steeper than the bottom roof. The roof mound has a statue of the snake god Naga with a
curved tail, a symbol of eternal strength.
The main hall of the temple is the room to worship Buddha Shakyamuni and also where religious
ceremonies take place. The Buddha altar is nearly 30 square meters wide, including 4 steps, above is the
main Buddha statue up to 2.1m high. Around the main statue, there are also 50 smaller Buddha statues
made of stone or wood very meticulously. The three sides of the main hall are decorated with special
paintings recounting the life of Buddha Shakyamuni. In which, the four largest frescoes are the four
main ones painted on the following topics: birth, ordination, enlightenment and parinirvana of the
Buddha.
In addition, the temple campus also owns many other constructions such as a pavilion, a lecture hall, a
monastery...
Over the course of more than 10 centuries of existence and development, Ang Pagoda has preserved a
lot of great historical significance. Moreover, the pagoda also owns a lot of ancient antiquities and
artifacts, which are of great significance to Buddhism, the most significant of which is the ancient
Buddhist scriptures written on leaves.
