Servant-Leadership Exemplified
The Berkana Institute was founded in 1992 to foster connections between diverse groups of people. Over the course of
two decades, the Institute hosted dialogues and developed an online forum for people to share ideas about how
organizations work.
In 2012 the institute made a conscious decision to step out the the spotlight and enter a period of reflection. The
following explanation is from the Berkana website: “The board and staff of The Berkana Institute made a decision to do
something non-traditional and yet aligned with our history of consistently being on the leading edge of living systems
work. The Institute discerned that it was time to take a rest for an undetermined period of time. This was a choice not
to die, but to enter into a period of needed stillness to gather nutrients in our roots so that we might again emerge as a
healthy, vibrant, contributor to our world.”
Berkana Institute is deeply committed to fostering communities where people can learn from on another and strive for
positive change. Although the institute is currently “bedded down”, the impact of their work continues to ripple
outward. The lessons of listening to one another and the strength that comes from community are timless

We have observed that large-scale change emerges when local actions get
connected globally while preserving their deeply local culture, flavor and
form.
Widespread impact does become possible when people working at the
local level are able to learn from one another, practice together and share
learning with communities everywhere.
