Applying Selection and Construction

1. How might a broadcaster make the
news / current affairs more
entertaining?
 Exciting visuals / sets / graphics etc
 Familiar stereotypical characters ie hero / villain
 Make it short and snappy
 Dramatise / Re-enact parts
 Use experts
 Make it sound sensational / extreme
 Make easier to understand - dumbing down
How many of these did you get? Write down those
you didn’t and LEARN THEM.

2.  Think about the following things;
- What angle / issue of the story will you focus on?
- Who will you interview?
- What questions will you ask?
- What images will you show?
- What words / voice over will accompany your story?
(This needs to be written and read out)
- What will your headline be?
- Remember the NEWS VALUES we discussed about
what makes a story “newsworthy.”
You have 15 Mins to do this before you have to feedback
your ideas to the rest of the class.

3. Things to think about
 How easy is it to change the real meaning
of a story when making it “infotaining?
 How does it affect how “real” the news is?
