SPARTA
Introduction
   Today Spartans are known for have
    been a complete military society and
    for being one of the bravest warriors of
    all time
   The movie “300” is an example of the
    epic folklore about them that has
    arrived us through history
   But, why they loved war and fight?
   I will try to explain the origins of that
    society and discover you some curious
    topics
Overview
   Poor lands, unsuitable for farming
   Dorians surrounded by Achaeans
   Needed to
    guarantee enough
    resources
   Conquered
    neighbouring
    productive lands
Overview
   For each Spartan, 8 serves/slaves
   Fear for a serve revolts
   Country forced to become militarized
   Determined the Spartan character
First communist State?
   Family concept           No currency
    suppression              Gold and silver coins
   Land State property       prohibition
   Everybody owns the       Farmer serves
    same lands               Rest of the jobs controlled
   Only one job for          by foreigners
    Spartans: warrior
   Kings only ruled
    the army
Helots
   Serves, not slaves      Owned by Spartan families
   Live in Messenia        Provide food to Spartans
The women
   The only Greek women          Women and children live
    who had access to              together

                    companions

                   Taught to be cold and
                    starved

Youthness (12 to 20)
   Military preparation and fighting training
   Drinking of black blood-made soap
   Adultery wasn’t punished, indeed was well
    regarded
Adult age
   Cripteia, the final test. Do
    you remember the 300
    from the movie?
   At 20’s they got the
    citizenship
   Sent to fight
   At 30’s were allowed to get
    married
   At 60’s were retired and
    join the elders council
