2. FATHER OF PLANT PATHOLOGY IN
WORLD
• Heinrich Anton De Bary (1831-1888) - The father of
Plant Pathology.
• In 1853, He established that rust and smuts are causes
not the result of disease, studied development many
smut and rust.
• He studied about blight and of potato and downy
mildew diseases.
• In 1861, Finally proved the causes of blight as
Phytophthora infestans by inoculating potato with
sporangia.
3. In 1865, Reported Heteroecism in Uradinales.
In 1866, He published his Text book-
Morphology and Physiology of Fungi, Lichens
and Myxomycetes.
He First coined the term Mycetozoa to include
lower and slime molds.
4. • He also coined the term Teleutospores as the final
spore form in the life cycle of macrocyclic rusts.
• In 1886 – Published Physiology of parasitism –
Sclerotina: Rotting of vegetables.
• He laid the foundation of modern experimental
pathology.
5. • He is aptly regarded as the Father of Modern Plant
Pathology and Father of Experimental Plant
Pathology.
• He trained M.S. Woroin of Russia, O.Brefeld of
Germany, P.M.A.Millardet of France, H.M.Ward of
England, W.G.Fallow of USA and Fischer of
Switzerland.
7. FATHER OF PLANT PATHOLOGY IN INDIA
• Edwin John Butler – (1874-1943) Father of plant
pathology in India.
• In 1901- He started systemaized and regular plant
pathological research.
• In 1901-1920: He initiated an exhaustive study on
Indian fungi and the diseases caused by them at IARI
at Pusa, Bihar.
8. • He is called as “Father of Indian Mycology”.
• In (1920-35) - First director of the Imperial Bureau of
Mycology in England.
• In 1918-His first and most classical book in the field
of plant pathology of India viz., Fungi and Diseases
in plants.
9. • In 1924 - He published a Monograph on Pythiaceous
and allied fungi and Bud rot of coconut and other
palms.
• In 1925- He also published a monograph on
Meteorological conditions and plant diseases and The
wilt diseases of cotton and sesamum in 1926.
10. • He Discovered the genus Allomyces.
• He reported bangle blight of potato, which is
considered to be the first record of bacterial diseases
from India.
