2. What is TOEFL?
As the name suggests, TOEFL is a Test of English as a Foreign Language. This test is
internationally recognized to measure the English language ability, reading, learning,
comprehension and communication. Almost all international universities functioning
with English as the medium of communication and learning, subject overseas student
to this exam or IELTS for admission in any programme.
TOEFL is administered by US-based organization ETS (The Education Testing
Service), therefore it is favoured over ILETS in American educational institutions.
Though it is recommended for students to learn the eligibility and mandatory tests of
the respective institution or university.

3. The Format of TOEFL –
TOEFL is divided into four sections. Each section tests the capabilities of
students based on different merits. It is advised to prepare for the test based on
the format prescribed.
1: The Reading Section-
Reading section is the test of your comprehension abilities. This exam duration
varies from 60-80 minutes. An important aspect of this section is to judge your
capability to understand the written text on varied topics.
2: The Listening Section -
This section again tests your comprehension power but based on your listening
and comprehension ability. This test is important because the lectures and
courses will be delivered in English language and the student should be able
enough to grasp the meaning and learn.
The duration of this section of the test will vary between 60-90 minutes.
3: The Speaking Section –
This section tests your English speaking abilities. Speaking section lasts for 20
minutes and it consists of six tasks which require student to express an opinion

4. 4: The Writing Section –
The writing section of TOEFL is important and its duration is 50 minutes.
Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, vocabulary is of paramount importance in
this section. The written content should be neat and appropriately developed
with relevant explanations.
Every section of the TOEFL (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) carries
weightage of 30 marks each which sums up to 120 Marks. So student score will
be between 0-120, combining scores of all the four sections.
Student can give the TOEFL examinations any number of times and score
requirement varies from university to university. The result is valid for two years
after the test date and the result of TOEFL comes online within two weeks of the
examination date.
