Rationales for Using Videos in the Classroom
Provides a visual
Videos provide visuals for English language learners. This
helps them start recognizing words they hear but do not
know.
Provides audio
Videos also provide audio for students. This aids English
language learners to make connections between the
words they hear and what they are seeing.
Provides better
experience
Videos can make learning more engaging for students.
They can help students pay better attention to lessons
with videos. Which can result in greater student
performance.
Introduce yourself on the first day of school. This is a great idea
for secondary teachers and special area teachers who teach
more than one class.
Present a virtual field trip which is a great alternative to in person
field trips. Students can learn about museums or places around
the world through a virtual field trip.
Introduce a unit by using a video to engage students. This will
help students get excited over the topic.
Have students record activities they are working on in class. This
helps keep parents involved in their students academics.
Students can create short book report videos. In their trailers
students can provide the title, author, characters, and plot points
to interest other students to read this book.

Ways to Use Video in the Classroom
Using Video in My Classroom
I can introduce the marine life unit.
My favorite way to introduce a unit is
with a video. I will introduce our new ARC
Core curriculum unit on marine life using
a video. As a class we can then create a
KWL chart with interesting facts they
learned through the video, what they
would like to learn, and as the unit
progresses, what they learned.
How can a video make my lesson relevant?
I recently learned about National
Geographic Explorer events. Through their
website, they hold different live events on
different science topics. I found out they
hosted a marine life event in the past. The
host takes and answers questions. Live
videos like these can help make lessons
more relevant by allowing students to ask
on the spot questions. Students can also
interact with other students and feed off of
other students ideas and questions.
