Hello, the greek team made a presentation called artisti-kos, we focussed on contemporary art of Kos
I am… with my fellow friend…
First cage roxana AS EARLIER SAID + NEXT ON THE PRES
Second cage anastasia WE ARE GOING TO SHOW YOU...
Pulitzer-awarded photographer Giannis Behrakis meets a refugee, looking towards the sunset. The middle-aged woman was blind, yet having a calm, faint smile on her face.
He is a teacher of Greek Language in a secondary school in Kos.
He volunteered registering refugee children
He has studied Film-Making as a second Bachelor Degree in Aristotle University of Salonica
He has made only short-films, many as part of a school project
He decided to make the short film “Nowhere” after walking one evening of summer 2015 in Kos, observing refugees on one pavement, and Europe’an tourists on the opposite.
He has been to Berlin, Los Angeles and many more cities, promoting his short films.
-Mr. Palaskas said that in order to make a film it has a long procedure to follow,
for Nowhere it took him 2 years to prepare the film and 2 years to complete it.
- He was sponsored by Goethe's institute.
- He stresses the voluntary work from Kos citizens, even from students.
- He feels that short-film making cannot provide a living.
- He thinks the first step towards making a film is the idea.
He said that basically refugees are in the middle of nowhere, as you can see in the last scene of the movie. They neither can go back nor move forward.
He mentioned that in the scene with the boat lost at sea originally there were another two boats. They filmed the scene at 5 am and everyone was really willing to work. He said he was sad that they had to cut it.
He said that if their countries could provide good living conditions, they wouldn't have to leave. He finally said that the point for it to be solved is not refugees to be accepted but rather not exist.
His response was that it felt very good. He also mentioned that at the school he works at some point he created a theatre group and they made a short film. Furthermore some of those students took part in “Nowhere” and he also added that it is very creative to make something like that.
He believes that it exists. That in everything exists quality but no one can define it before they do it. You can’t just sit down and say now i’m gonna make some high art. The result is what matters. And that doesn’t mean that something without much quality won’t be liked by many.
He said even he was doubting if this movie was possible because of the scenes with the boats. Because till then he hadn't made such a professional movie. So yes impossible can become possible according to him.
As he concluded
-Everyone has ideas
-Art can spread ideas, as long as public is open to them
-Young people are willing to adopt ideas and reject stereotypes
-Persistence and dedication make somebody overcome any obstacles
-Kos, as well as other Greek sites, offer ideal scenery.
-He encouraged us to make movies as part of a project
-Promised to help us on our own film!!!!
