Today is my opportunity to reach out to our Retired Military Personnel and their dependents, widows and
family members to let you know that all of you are still part of the Military family and we still need you.
You have the opportunity to help our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen match
their talents and interests with things on the installation that need to get done. As I echo similarities of
the Commander IMCOM’s message, the Retired Military Appreciation Day coincides with the Joint
Services’ desire to emphasize that Retired Military Personnel are part of the Military lifecycle. Our Soldier
for Life mentality says that once you earn the title of Soldier, you’re a Soldier for Life. And when you retire
from the Army and the other Services, we still need you. That’s why we don’t call you a retiree any more.
As Retired Military Personnel, your mission has changed, but your duty has not. In uniform, your mission
was leading Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen in fighting our nation’s wars. Now
your mission is to HIRE and INSPIRE. By volunteering your time on an installation -- at the Army
Community Service, in the hospital, in the Army Retirement Services Office, or even for a special event --
you’re showing today’s Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen what lifelong
commitment looks like. Just as important, you’ll get a bonus yourself from the experience. Thank you for
your attendance and I hope that you will enjoy the services provided today and the opportunity to share
your experiences with the active military community wherever you are located.
