A series of real metal laminates from Ober
with up to 12 different finishes and textures.
The use of these textures and finishes
completely transforms these metal decors
in a truly fascinating way – you need to
see them to believe this!
43. Marotte is part of the Ober group. The company designs
and produces simply stunning aesthetic and technical
innovations for interior design, with an excellent material
quality. Using extraordinarily deep textures, Marotte literally
plays with reflected light to give designers a fantastic
opportunity to create unique interior spaces.
44
44. CARVED PANELS
Using the latest CNC machining
technology to create deep structures
within a combination of MDF, real
wood veneers, thermoformed tinted
film and Samsung Staron solid
surface material.
45
45. Borg! is one of Marotte’s products and is
composed of 36 designs divided into 6
structures and available in 6 natural wood
species. The wood surface is sublimated
and protected by a monocoat finish, which
gives a completely natural feel to the panel.
46
46. ‘Gloss’ is the new collection of Marotte
carved panels. Three exclusive finishes
are offered; Ice Gloss, Black Gloss and
Metal Gloss – featuring 6 models of
sculptures. The three finishes are
obtained by applying a thermoformed
mass tinted film on an MDF substrate,
which has previously been carved. This
technique combines stability and surface
resistance. The deeply carved panels
reflect light in a remarkable way creating
fascinating high gloss designs.

49. The design brief was a tremendous
challenge. The plinth had to support the
armature for the Stegosaurus without
actually touching it, eliminating the risk
of vibration or impact movement.
50
CASE STUDY
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
After visiting Blackheath’s Samsung Staron exhibition stand at
the 100 Percent Design Show, the Natural History Museum’s
in-house designer, Gemma Smith, worked with us and award-
winning design, build and fit out company, Paragon Creative.
York-based Paragon Creative was commissioned to create a
plinth which would house the most complete Stegosaurus
skeleton in the world. The dinosaur, on display at London’s
Natural History Museum, was discovered in 2003 in Wyoming
US and existed around 150 million years ago.
In total, the armature and skeleton weighs 900kg. Paragon’s
Production Design and Solid Surface facility designed an internal
independent steel frame inside the outer plinth, which sits on
bespoke shock absorbent feet. The outer plinth then surrounds
and covers this inner plinth with no contact what so ever. This
outer plinth is covered in two colours of Samsung Staron Solid
Surface (Sanded Tundra and Sanded Stratus). Each layer has
been CNC cut and fabricated to exact dimensions, which keeps
the contours precise and even, and ensures the structure of the
plinth is strong enough to carry the weight of the Stegosaurus.
The whole plinth and Armature was then erected in Paragon’s
Solid Surface workshop in York before being dismantled and
shipped down to the Natural History Museum and installed on
site behind tight security.
Paragon also built a Staron Solid Surface interpretation table, incorporating
replicas of the dinosaur supplied by Propshop and Graphics and AV by the
Natural History Museum.

MERTHYR TYDFIL COLLEGE
Merthyr Tydfil College needed reception counters for the main
entrance and each department entrance, as well as food service
counters and cash desks for the coffee shop and refrectory areas.
The Samsung Staron design: Tempest Zenith was chosen as it
best reflected the appearance of the shale rock that makes up
a large part of the geology of the Merthyr Tydfil area.
Each of the reception desks were machined with a CNC router
to allow Bright White Staron to be inlaid flush into the Zenith
design to provide location signage in both Welsh and English.
This work, while intricate, provided bold and clear signs that are
easily cleaned and will stay looking as good as new.
The project architect was Boyes Rees of Cardiff and the main
contractor was Interserve. The reception counters were
manufactured by Limebright of Newport Gwent and the service
and coffee shop surfaces were manufactured by Counterline
of Liverpool.
Staron’s design features were utilised
to their full; hygienic and easy to clean
seamless surfaces with strong
construction and great looks!

CAFFE RIZZOLI,
MEADOWHALL SHOPPING CENTRE
Caffe Rizzoli teamed up with Samsung Staron and Blackheath
(the exclusive Samsung Staron distributor in the UK and Ireland)
to create a stylish, sophisticated meeting place, eatery and
prosecco bar in a busy public area within the Meadowhall
shopping centre in Sheffield. The underside of a public spiral
staircase cleverly acts as the home for a working kitchen.
Alongside ABA Architecture Ltd and the Roann Marble
Company, Blackheath supplied Samsung Staron Bright White
for seating, kitchen surfaces and food service areas. Despite the
fast-paced environment, Samsang Staron’s seamless joins and
elegantly thermoformed shapes provide a sense of calm in the
contemporary space.
Sweeping arcs of Samsung Staron Bright White surfaces
form the perimeter and a solid structure for the installation of
recessed lighting, glass screens and seating areas. With no
visible joins and smooth, non-porous surfaces, Samsung Staron
gives Caffe Rizzoli easy to clean, totally hygienic and robust
surfaces for food preparation in the kitchen and the serving of
food and drink in the café and bar.

CASE STUDY
GUY’S HOSPITAL
For the completion of its main entrance refurbishment in 2011,
Guy’s Hospital in London wanted to recreate the London skyline
inside its public areas.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust commissioned
the design partnership Artinsite to shoot three panorama
photographs featuring iconic buildings from around the hospital’s
site at London Bridge.
The images were selected to pick up the colours of the Trust’s
way-finding scheme and positioned to make best use of the
three wall elevations. The images were digitally printed onto
durable and hygienic class 1 fire rated laminate / MDF composite
panels to satisfy all building regulations.
These panels were produced to a maximum height of 4.5 metres
and ranged from 12 to 20 metres in length. These impressive
displays of famous London scenes are designed to put visitors
to Guy’s Hospital at ease, by creating a familiar visual
environment with a great sense of space.
Blackheath worked as part of the team alongside Artinsite and
the supplier to produce stunning artwork which has won much
critical acclaim since its installation.
“Blackheath were very helpful and
sourced the different aspects of
production for us - their knowledge of
the industry is impressive. Blackheath
were true partners in that they took on
the responsibility for getting the project
right - for us and for Guy’s Hospital.”

CASE STUDY
MANCHESTER MUSEUM
Manchester Museum, which is owned by the University
of Manchester, revamped its entire third floor gallery, from
learning area to washroom facilities.
The Museum wanted to create a striking feature in the
washrooms, using patterned glass. Blackheath, working
alongside architect Wilson Mason Partners and building
contractors Manchester & Cheshire Construction, suggested
an alternative. Acrylic Glass, with its ease of installation,
proved to be a better match for the job. The material was
scribed on site, allowing it to fit perfectly alongside the
building’s original, ornate cornicing, a feat that would have
been much more difficult and time-consuming with glass.
Using Acrylic Glass for this job meant that the pattern could
have a continuous print across joins and around corners,
making the seamless design really stand out. Its durability
and ease of maintenance also made Acrylic Glass the
perfect choice for this space.
Blackheath provided two colours of Acrylic Glass; Green Mist for inside
the cubicles, and Olive Grove, which was printed with an elaborate
pattern, for the outside wall.
58. CASE STUDY
STOURBRIDGE COLLEGE
During 2015, Stourbridge College Library was completely
refurbished. For this project, we worked with commercial
interiors and retail display fit out company Apex Design Ltd as
designers, contractors and installers.
Staron Bright White 12mm solid surfacing material was used with
a lime green high pressure laminate to create the circular surfaces
for the internet and email access points within the Library.
Staron Bright White was selected, as it is readily available from
Blackheath Products: a crucial consideration for any contractor
when the project lead time is tight. It is also hygienic, very easy to
clean and hard wearing. Its solid colour also gives it the flexibility
to be formed into circles (and any other shape) seamlessly.

(Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
Thermally resilient thermoplastic and impact
resistant with excellent end of life disposal
characteristics, ABS is suitable for flat panel
edging as well as internal and external radii.
ABS decoratively colour matches numerous
HPL, MFC and MFMDF surface designs.
Acrylic Glass
An acrylic polymer glass which has been
coated on one side with plain and
pearlescent colours. It looks like real glass
but is shatterproof, waterproof, totally
hygienic, heat resistant up to 100°C and
offers good UV, stain and scratch
resistance. Available in 4mm thickness.
High Pressure Decorative
Laminates (HPL)
Manufactured through fusing layers of resin
impregnated decorative paper and kraft
paper under high pressure and temperature
to create a durable surface, usually 1mm in
thickness, which can be used flat or curved.
The flexible laminate can be bonded to
various grades and thicknesses of
chipboard or MDF to create a rigid structure.
High Pressure Compact Grade
Decorative Laminates (CGL)
This is a solid laminated core comprising
multiple layers of black dyed resin
impregnated kraft papers and a decorative
paper on both faces. Its thickness can be
specified to be between 3mm and 30mm
which means it can be rigid and self
supporting. CGL is tough and highly water
resistant and is therefore perfect for wet areas.
High Pressure Liners
and Backing Grade Laminates
Manufactured through fusing layers of resin
impregnated kraft paper under high pressure
and temperature to create a durable surface,
usually 1mm in thickness, which can be
used flat or curved. This product is often
specified without a decorative surface
because it is used on the reverse side of a
panel to balance the structure of the
chipboard or MDF panel which has been
faced with a decorative laminate.
Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC)
Melamine impregnated decorative papers
are bonded under heat and pressure to
both sides of chipboard. A low cost panel
suitable for low impact and low humidity
environments.
Melamine Faced Medium Density

A low cost panel suitable for low impact
and low humidity environments.
Solid Surfacing
A blend of acrylic polymer, natural minerals
(aluminium tri-hydroxide) and pigments,
solid surfacing is a completely inert and
non-porous material. It is therefore a safe,
hygienic material for use in food preparation
and all other surfacing applications.
The use of thermoforming and
inconspicuous seams combined with
fantasy and real stone effects can help the
designer create truly unique and high
performing surfaces.
