Holoptica, the Silicon Valley, California-
based embossed hologram producer
set up in February 2012 by Jiri (George)
Perkous (see HN April 2013), has
developed a new secure document
verification and authentication product
called DocVAULT that utilises a new
holographic feature called COMPASS .
ownership with – Segment Security, itself
a company that only went into production
in 2011 (see HN November 2011) for the
production of micro-dots (holographic and
non-holographic).
The Holoptica business is set up for
hologram production and developed
holoQR™

2015). Now the company has gone one step
further with the development of DocVAULT
and the holographic COMPASS feature.

WhatisDocVAULT?
DocVAULT is an anti-counterfeit system for
documents and products that combines:
Holography – with the incorporation of
holoQR and compass;
Chemistry – with the incorporation of a
synthetic DNA SMARTMARK ™
;
Digital and information technology
elements – in the form of mobile devices
that utilise an authentication and
verification app.
Every document has a hologram applied
that is scanned or photographed together
with the document or product, encrypted
and placed into a proprietary secure cloud
or server. The hologram can incorporate
a range of features, including nanotext, a
4-way and dynamic covert laser reading
synthetic DNA smartmark.
The hologram also includes two patented
overt features. First is the patented holoQR
code that can be scanned using a mobile
device to retrieve the document or product
information, and the second is the latest
COMPASS feature.
COMPASSfeature
COMPASS is a first level overt feature
that can be easily used by both public
or inspectors and requires no training
or special tools. The feature is available
either as a foil or tamper evident label and
incorporates the following:
1 Fixed position – when the COMPASS
hologram is turned in any direction on
its axis all elements of the hologram will
turn, but the COMPASS feature will not
move or spin – just like the needle on
a magnetic compass. The feature can
be any suitable graphic object, letter,
number etc.
2 QR code – the COMPASS hologram
can include a holoQR feature. Scanning
the holographic QR code with a mobile
device enables the document or product
to be viewed, authenticated, and data
associated with the protected document
or products to be retrieved. The data can
include photographs, sound, consumer
product information and more. This also
makes this hologram a smart label.
3 holoTrue app – scanning the hologram
with a mobile device using the free to
public holoTrue mobile app allows the
hologram to be examined on a micro
level to provide an instant originality
verification result.
‘InternetofThings’label
One of the applications of COMPASS is for
smart labels, specifically a smart Internet
of Things label (IoT), which combines
anti-counterfeit holographic and other
technologies with mobile authentication in a
single product.
The IoT label is designed to be used
for many product types, including food,
consumer goods, pharmaceuticals,
cosmetics, firearms, certificates, security
and legal documents. The labels can have a
number of elements including holoQR, and
other options such as holoNFC . The low
cost labels are designed to fulfill multiple
requirements that include:
One click, real time, instant connectivity
access – to information by any iOS,
Android and WIN mobile device including
laptops or PCs;
Providing consumer product information
– nutritional or content information, use
by date, manufacturer/distributor/supplier
information, health and safety data and
compliance or contact details etc;
Customer/brand interaction – instant one
click, real time, mobile device connectivity
to brand loyalty programmes, customer
feedback, product and service updates;
Brand protection – one click, real time,
instant mobile device verification and
authentication of product originality;
Document protection – mobile device
instant verification and authentication
of document originality and document
content.
