The Medici Effect
An intersection of fields, disciplines,
or cultures can lead to a large
number of extraordinary ideas that
creates Medici effect.
Table of content
 The intersection “Best chance
to Innovate”
 The rise of intersections
 Associative barriers
 How to make barriers fall
 Randomly combined concepts
 Thought Walk
The Intersection
“Best Chance to Innovate”
Example- Brain Science program
FIELDS
DESIGN
INNOVATION
DISCIPLINES
CULTURES
Directional Ideas
IDEAS THAT ARE
GENERATED DUE TO
COMBINATION OF
CONCEPTS WITHIN A
PARTICULAR FIELD AND
EVOLVE ALONG A
PARTICULAR DIRECTION.
REWARDS ARE
PREDICTABLE AND
QUICKLY ATTAINABLE.
EXAMPLE- REFINEMENT
OF PRODUCTS FOR NEW
MARKET SEGMENTS
Intersectional
Ideas
Ideas that are generated by combining concepts between multiple
and can leap in new directions.
They open up entirely new fields.
They are surprising and fascinating.
They provide a space for a person to call its own and also generates follower.
They can affect the world in unprecedented way.
They can be a source of directional innovation.
The Rise of Intersections
 The movement of people leads to plethora of
cultural intersections that generates ground
breaking ideas.
 The convergence science through
Interdisciplinary scientific researches are
progressing.
 The leap of computation
Associative
Barriers
 How we assume certain things with a given set of
information without opening our mind to the
broader possibilities.
 When a chef sees a fish he may think of a recipe
while a writer get the idea for a new story about
sport-fishing. Associative barriers lead a thought
pattern and responsible for inhibiting creativity.
Example- Darwin’s Theory of Evolution
How to Make
the Barriers Fall
 Expose yourself to a range of
cultures
 Learn differently
 Assumptions reversal
Brings
Diversity
Innovation
Reverse
Assumptions
We should “unlearn” what we have learned in order to
free our mind.
1. Think about the assumptions associated with the
situation.
2. Write down those assumptions and then reverse
them.
3. Think about how to make those reversals
meaningful
Assumption Reversal Insight
Car needs driver for ride. Car does not need driver
for ride.
Self driving car can be
made that are
Car runs on fuel petrol or
diesel or gas.
Car does not require fuel
petrol or diesel or gas.
Cars can be run on
electricity. Electric
driven cars can be built.
Car depends on petrol
pump for fuel demand.
Car does not depend on
petrol pump for fuel
demand.
Electric Cars can get
electricity directly from
the road. On-road
transfer technology has
been developed.
Assumption Reversal Insight
Restaurants
have menus
Restaurants
have no menus
The diner selects the desired food items
and the chef creates
a dish from them, specifically for each
customer.
Restaurants
charge money
for food
Restaurants do not
charge money
for food
The café charges for time spent instead
of food consumed. Selected
low-cost food items and beverages are
given for free.
Restaurants
serve food
Restaurants do not
serve food
People
bring their own food and beverages in
picnic baskets and pay a
service charge for the location.
Randomly Combine Concepts
 Creativity, is a combination of concepts and it is random.
 Luck is indeed an important factor.
 Two main types of random combinations “Flash-in-the-sky” and
“Prepared-mind”
How to Find the Combinations
 By diversifying occupations! The act of moving between, or switching, fields
through different jobs, projects, or hobbies can be an effective way to
generate unplanned, unique insights, this process is occupation
diversification.
 By interacting with diverse groups of people.
 Intersection hunting
Thought Walk
Search for connections in unlikely places and then see where those
connection lead.
 Thought walk can enhance the chances of random
combination.
 Include various characteristics of the item you
selected.
Ignite an Explosion of Ideas
 The best way to get a good idea is to have a
lot of ideas.
 Scientists, artists, and writers with the best
ideas are those who produce
the most ideas.
How to
succeed in
the face time
of failure
 Try ideas that fail to find those that won’t
In order to successfully realize ideas at the
intersection, one must try out many different ideas
generated through the explosion of concept
combinations. Some of those ideas will fail…the others
won’t.
 Reserve resources for trial and error.
While realizing an intersectional idea one must use
resources such as money, time, goodwill very wisely
because there is uncertainty involved in planning and
plan needs to be changed over and over again.
 Remain motivated
Stay motivated to push past mistakes and stick to
idea until you succeed.
How to leave
the network
behind
 Break the chain of dependence
In order to enter the intersection of two fields you
must break out of your existing network because this
is the factor that may hold you back Which can be
done by stop relying on them.
Example: Eric Bonabeau for “Swarm Intelligence”
 Prepare to fight
You need to stand up to challenges posed by
established fields. There is always risk involved in
doing so, therefore one must have the ability to live
with risk.
How to
adopt
balanced
view of risks
 Avoid behavioural traps relating to risk
Trap 1: If things are going well, we stay within a
field.
Trap 2: Time spent in a field becomes a reason to
stay in the field.
Trap 3: We view risk at the intersection from the
directional perspective.
 Acknowledge fear and risks
Fear can not be escaped but it can be managed by
accepting them and acknowledging the chances of
failure, this leads to effective realization of ideas at
intersection.
Step into the
intersection
and create The
Medici Effect
A person with an open mind, The one who
has willingness to reach beyond his field of
expertise and can break down barriers and
stay motivated through failure, has the
ability to create MEDICI EFFECT.
The world is connected and there is a place
where those connections are made—a
called the Intersection.
All we have to do is find it . . . and dare to
step in.
THANK You!
