EXPERIENCE
Landon IP Inc - Alexandria, VA
July 2014 - Present
Patent Analyst
• Analyzing Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications relating to networked computer
systems, GPS, Video distribution, device motion and orientation, malware detection
and removal, computer data marketplaces and other inventions involving networks.
• Researching potential novelty of inventions using commercial and government patent
databases of prior art, patent publications and technical disclosure documents.
• Writing official opinions on the patentability of internationally filed applications for
utility patents which include an analysis of the proposed inventions novelty,
obviousness, utility, similarity to prior art, and compliance to disclosure standards.
Self Employment
September 2009 - Present
Freelance Developer/Technician
• Developed an iOS and Android mobile application using Objective-C/Java with a PHP
and SQL backend for a speech therapists, which assisted nurses in writing treatment
reports.
• Developed a Raspberry Pi based appliance using PureData and C++ that measures the
loudness of audio in real time and suppresses volume when a user defined limit is
breached.
• Developing an iOS mobile application using Objective C that assists in the tracking and
recommendation of exercises for maintaining and improving general fitness.
• Maintaining Debian software packages of several audio synthesis related programs for
the kxstudio linux distribution.
• Installed and repaired networks, media systems, PC/MAC computers and printers for
residential and small office clients.
United States Patent and Trademark Office - Alexandria, VA
June 2008 - September 2009
Patent Examiner
• Examined US-filed patent applications for new inventions relating to client/server
technologies, mobile phone applications, matchmaking and scheduling websites, server
optimizations, copy protections, office collaborative tools and computer networks.
• Researched government, commercial and public databases to discern novelty of
proposed inventions.
• Wrote office actions stating the government's decision regarding the patentability,
similarity to prior art, novelty, obviousness, utility, and law and regulation compliance
of patent applications.
• Assisted applicant legal staff with adjusting patent claims, specification and formalities
in their patent application amendments.
Information Technology & Engineering Computing Services - NC State University
August 2003 - May 2008
IT Help Desk Consultant
• Provided phone and in-person technical support for the university systems including
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Windows NT/2000/XP, and Solaris desktops.
• Resolved issues relating to system configuration, network outages, printers, application
use in a 24 hour computer lab environment comprising hundreds of systems.
• Installed and repaired hardware and software for desktop computers, printers, wired
and wireless networks and various engineering instruments.
• Trained students in Linux usage, university computer policies, development
environments, and system configuration.
Cox Computer Consulting/Seneca5 - Raleigh, NC
June 2006 - January 2007
Test Automation Consultant
• Developed software to perform automation tests and control of electronics using
labVIEW, NI Compact Rio, NI Vision, embedded C, C++, and javascript.
• Programmed device drivers to communicate with newly manufactured devices via
RS232, USB, Modbus, CAN Networks, and proprietary interfaces.
• Created a software testing package for SquareD that performs quality and functionality
tests for their manufactured circuit breaker/generator switches. Functions included
controlling probe and measurement instruments to verify proper electrical response of
the device, creating test stimuli to verify proper ground fault interruption and
generator activation, and generating standard compliant device test reports.
• Wrote software to perform device testing of an LCD based marine navigation device
manufactured by Caterpillar. Functions included measuring electrical responses at
various contact points, verifying proper button press responses using an automated air
pump pushing instrument, verifying screen functionality using a controlled camera and
image processing techniques.
Alcatel-Lucent - Raleigh, NC
June 2005 - January 2006
Web Application Developer
• Contributed to the development of WAM (Web based Access Manager), a web based
application used to configure fiber optic and DSL Network backbone routers utilizing
Tool Command Language (TCL), CGI, and AJAX.
• Designed a web based interface that takes form input and uses Tcl and regular
expressions to construct command-line instructions that control and configure the
operating system used by Alcatel's routers.
• Created a simulator script using TCL that imitates the responses of an Alcatel router's
command language, used to test WAM's implementation and connectivity.
• Created a traffic generator application used to test WAM's responses to network
congestion, which included raising alarms, re-routing and throttling data, and
activating additional connections.
