4. BIOTECHNOLOGY IN INDIA
1978: First biotech company BIOCON was established at Bangalore dealing with
industrial enzymes. Later on it progressed and expanded its scope into
biotherapeutics.
1981: Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) was established at
Hyderabad dealing with rDNA technology. It is one of the most prestigious research
institutions today.
1986: Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is an Indian government department,
under the Ministry of science and Technology responsible for administrating
development and commercialisation in the field of modern biology and
biotechnology in India.
