Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at my preliminary task, I feel like my understanding of
horror conventions has improved, but I think that it’s due to how we
didn’t have time to apply any genre related conventions. When we
chose ‘horror’ as our genre I tried to understand how horror movies
have used different features and techniques to draw in the audience.
So when we started the main task I began to apply the conventions I
had learnt due to the fact that I was analysing lots of horror movies
to see what approaches they used to attract their audience. I found
out that a lot of them used:
Visuals; Often dark tones and highlights as well as red and black to
connote fear and death within the film.
Low lighting is mainly used within the horror genre to represent the
‘unknown’ and create shadows to spark the audience’s imagination
and create unsettling emotions.
Props were used to help identify the particular genre and the style of
horror. A few that were used in some of the horrors I watched were;
religious symbols, knives and masks. This again uses the fear of the
unknown.
The monsters within the horror movie connote the sickening,
supernatural and extreme nature of the horror movie and the scare
factor that are portrayed within the movie.
There are a lot more features that I have understood since doing the
preliminary task which definitely looked more professional and
helped to attract the audience. I have also improved my skills in
‘technology’. This is obvious, as during my preliminary I found the
software quite difficult to use as I was not well accustomed to it, but
now I have learnt new things such as sorting out the layout of pages
and importing images, videos and texts.
