SpRING FeAST AT The loCh
It’s been a long, miserable winter, but we’re now
only weeks away from the first big springtime
attraction of the season.
venue and the area’s already
booming reputation as a prime
source of Scottish culinary
expertise and fine fare at its most
exciting.
Nobody is going to notice any
April showers at this celebration
of all that’s excellent about the
area’s finest produce, because
on past form the cookery
demonstrations and food stalls,
music and games will again be a
recipe for what’s already a major
local annual crowd-puller.
Springfest at Lomond Shores was
an unqualified success last year,
attracting people from all over
the area and beyond.
Now planning is well advanced
for this year’s spectacular, and
a still better line-up of chefs,
special events and entertainment
is planned for the two-day
spectacular on April 2 and 3.
It’s only the second of its kind,
but has already garnered support
from top food providers across
Scotland, thanks to the flagship
Best of all it’s a family day which
has plenty to amuse younger
visitors while the grown-ups
consider the finer points of food
you won’t find in just any high
street retailer.
While foodie writers tend to
concentrate on the up market city
bistros they know so well local
residents don’t have to look any
farther than West Dunbartonshire
for cuisine fit for a king – and for
added interest can enjoy meeting
chefs and food producers in person.
They’re the sort of people who
are happy to pass on their
expertise, and to discuss with
fellow enthusiasts all the work
and craft that goes into the
production of fabulous fare.
If you’re a fan of Masterchef and
similar programmes you might
think producing top class dishes
is an angst-ridden slog, full of
near-disasters and collapsing
vol-au-vents, but in the comfort
of your own home you can easily
aspire to be “very good” without
having to match the sort of quality
you’d expect in a top restaurant by
absorbing some relatively simple
tips on preparation and how best
to use ingredients – chances are
the height of your ambition may
be a great dinner party for a few
friends.
More information on the final
line-up will be released shortly,
but meanwhile maybe put that
first weekend in April in your
diary as a must-do local day out.

BIG plANS FoR The CASTle
A masterplan whose key local elements include a
major boost for Balloch Castle and the village has
been given a crucial green light.
Named ‘LIVE Park’, the Plan
outlines an ambitious vision
for making Loch Lomond and
The Trossachs National Park
an attractive and viable place
for young people and families,
while also providing a base for
businesses to start and grow – and
developing amenities for visitors.
The scheme follows detailed
consultation, and in local terms
will include a plan to bring listed
Balloch Castle back into use.
In a related move it will also seek
to make improvements to Balloch
village centre, with the new
development linked to Lomond
Shores.
Following extensive engagement
and consultation during the
process to prepare the Plan, it
has now been formally adopted
by the National Park Authority as
its Local Development Plan, the
legal document to determine all
planning decisions in the National
Park. The Plan will be updated
every five years.
Gordon Watson, chief executive
of the Park said: “The National
Park	is	an	amazing	place	and	a
special	landscape	with	so	much
to offer.
“LIVE Park sets out the
opportunities for it to continue
to thrive and develop sensitively
as a place for people to live,
invest, visit and experience over
the next ten years.
“We’ve	worked	really	closely
with	people	and	organisations
to	fi	nd	out	how	they	want	to
see that happen.”
Stuart Mearns, the Park’s head
of rural development and
planning, said: “We are already
seeing an increase in developer
interest in key locations
including	Balloch	and	Callander
as	well	as	some	of	our	smaller
communities,	such	as	Luss	where
new	affordable	housing	is
currently being built.
“Our	focus	next	year	will	be
to use the Plan as the basis for
securing	continued	investment
in the National Park.”
The council is also heavily involved in local
development,	with	plans	which	are	to
include	a	Dumbarton	waterfront	walkway,
as	well	as	two	public	squares	in	Balloch.

JAMeS TAKeS The helM
A keen yachtsmen
whose CV includes a
former role as chief
executive of the Royal
Yachting Association
has been elected to
a top job with the
National Park.
James Stuart, who is managing
director of Entrepreneurial
Scotland, brings a wealth of
experience in sport, recreation
and tourism to his new post as
convener, and takes up his post
on March 1. His career has also
included service as an officer with
a Scottish regiment for eight years.
The scale and complexity of
the task of maintaining and
further developing the area’s
prime natural asset is possibly
well-suited to someone capable
of devising far-reaching
and pragmatic solutions to
challenging problems.
Meanwhile his yachting
experience will surely be
invaluable when it comes to
dealing with Loch Lomond itself.
These days he’s a member of
the National Tourism Strategy
(Tourism Scotland 2020) Strategic
Leadership Group, and was first
appointed to the National Park
Board in 2015.
He said: “The National Park has
come	a	long	way	in	recent	years
with	numerous	successes	and
gaining national recognition.
“We	are	also	about	to	deliver	some
key	projects	that	will	secure	long-
term,	environmental,	community
and	economic	benefi	ts.
“These	projects	will	characterise
much	of	our	work	over	the	next
few	years	and	are	crucial	to	the
continued	progress	and	impact	of
the Park.”
He added: “As	convener	I	aim
to lead the organisation in a
way	that	is	mindful	of	these	big
projects	whilst	also	looking	to
the future."
The current convener, Linda
McKay, is stepping down in
February 2017 after serving the
maximum two terms.
She said: “I	would	like	to
congratulate	James	on	his
election as convener of Loch
Lomond	and	The	Trossachs
National	Park	and	look	forward
to	working	with	him	over	the
next	couple	of	months	to	ensure
a	smooth	transition.”
The	National	Park's	new	convenor	James	Stuart,

who	will	be	stepping	down	this	month.

Children’s Hospice Association Scotland’s Robin
House in Balloch is able to keep delivering
exemplary results because of the public’s
generosity – but it needs volunteers too.
CHAS is currently trying to get
out the message that local people
with some time to spare can
make a difference to children’s
lives by getting involved in one of
several flexible ways.
A spokeswoman tells us:
“Volunteers help us reach more
families than we could possibly
achieve without their support, and
their enthusiasm and energetic
support for the work of CHAS is
welcomed by our children, their
families, and our staff alike.
“When you volunteer with us
you’ll receive all the training
and support you’ll need. We will
also cover your travel expenses
and you will get the opportunity
to attend any events that are
happening throughout the year.”
She adds: “We appreciate that
successful volunteering is not just
about how it benefits CHAS, it’s
also about making sure that our
volunteers obtain the most they
can from the experience.
“Just as we strive to honour
our commitment to you by
providing you with a suitable
volunteering role, we expect all
our volunteers to do the same
for us. If, for example, you are
unwell or realise you are unable
to continue your volunteering
commitment to CHAS, we ask
you to let us know as soon as
possible.
Opportunities to volunteer are
“very flexible”, and the team can
work with you to find something
that suits you – and, if you like,
your colleagues.
You might be working with
the sort of company that likes
group endeavour, and wants to
support a local cause, and in that
case your firm might consider
becoming a corporate volunteer
for CHAS. Under-18’s can get
involved in fundraising too."

MeeT uS AT The FouNTAIN
One of the area’s most prized public spaces is
Levengrove Park, an amenity at the heart of the
community that never seems to change.
However in a couple of months
time there will be some important
innovations taking place there,
and this month the Friends of
Levengrove Park group are
aiming to let people know exactly
what’s afoot.
The council recently gained £2.8
million from the Heritage Lottery
Fund to finance a much-needed
upgrade, and the Friends will be
explaining how that cash is going
to be spent to anyone who is
interested in find out out more.
The group has a walk in the park
event on Saturday, February 11,
all welcome, with the aim of
introducing people who thought
they knew all about the facility
on their doorstep to some of its
more interesting features. It’s
worth getting the big picture,
because the upgrading work is
going to take a year to complete,
starting in May, and ought to
make a big difference.
The restoration programme is
to include a new pavilion, the
restoration of Kilmahew Fountain,
improvements to St. Serf’s Church,
a new children’s playpark,
improved footpaths and lighting,
and interpretation panels – and
quite a lot more besides.
The Friends of Levengrove
Park, in association with
West Dunbartonshire Council
Greenspace department, are keen
to keep the community up to
date with developments.
Friends chairwoman Linda
Adam said: “The	walk	in	the
park	will	give	the	community	an
opportunity	to	meet	members
of the Friends group and the
project	manager	and	get	detailed
information	relating	to	various
aspects of the restoration
project”.
It starts at 2pm from the
Kilmahew Fountain – let’s hope
it’s dry – and should be a fun way
of getting the lowdown on how
this familiar part of town life is
going to be improved.

loCh To hoST ICe SWIM
The International Ice Swimming
Association Ice Cup & British
Ice Swimming Championships
event on February 11 takes
place in the loch from The Cruin.
The championship race will be
1,000m, while an Ice Gala on the
same day will offer races of 50m
to 500m. Rules stipulate that
the water temperature must be
below 5C.
The event is one of many
IISA ice swims that take place
throughout the winter in Europe.
The International Ice Swimming
Association (IISA) was formed
in 2009 by South African Ram
Barkai with a vision to formalise
swimming in icy water. There are
now almost 50 country members.
Ram says: “IISA’s passion – and the
people	that	swim	in	our	events	–
is	to	swim	in	icy	waters	in	every
location possible around our
globe.”
Rules for IISA events ensure
maximum safety measures. These
regulate water temperatures
– 5C or less – distance, time
and conditions. The Ice Mile is
considered the ultimate race
distance, while a 1km event was
introduced in 2014 to allow more
people to compete. Swimmers can
wear only goggles, a swim cap and
standard swimming costume.
Pauline Barker, of IISA Great
Britain, is organising the event
in partnership with Balloch-
based open water swim
coaching company, Swim 4
Miles. She says: “The location
is perfect for Scotland’s first
ice	swimming	championships.
So	many	international	ice
swimmers	say	they	want	to
come	to	Scotland.”
This year, the race entries sold
out in only a few days but next
year Pauline hopes the event
will be bigger. She says: “We
encourage	people	to	come
along	to	watch	and	enjoy	the
gala	entertainments,	even	if
they	are	not	swimming.	There
will	be	a	ceilidh	after	the
swimming.”
See www.iceswimminggb.co.uk
and www.swim4miles.co.uk.
Chilly Loch Lomond will welcome 100 daring
non-wetsuit swimmers at Scotland’s first ice
swimming championships this month.

INTeRNeT SAFeTy IS VITAl
Just a few weeks ago we saw the
predictable deluge of electronic
gadgets find their way into children’s
festive stockings – but are we exercising
due caution?
The NSPCC is urging local parents
to talk to their children about
online safety if they bought them
internet devices as Christmas
presents, following a huge rise in
contacts to Childline about online
abuse.
It takes several forms, most
of them well publicised, and
their effects range in scale from
deeply distressing to downright
dangerous.
Unfortunately the bad news is that
reports of online abuse are on the
up, and last year took up a third of
all contacts about online issues –
including bullying and safety.
Some children contacted
Childline because they felt
trapped by their situation,
because they felt guilty and
ashamed, were frightened to
talk to an adult about the issue,
were being blackmailed, or
were considering meeting up in
person.
Some wrongly feel that they are
to blame when things go wrong,
and are afraid to speak out.
The NSPCC recommends parents
talk regularly and openly with
their children and has a host
of simple tips and advice on its
website, at www.nspcc.
org.uk, for example the
need to talk about
what is and is not
acceptable to share
online.
Matt Forde, National
Head of Service for
NSPCC Scotland said:
“The	web	can	be	a
fantastic place for children
and young people to socialise,
explore their interests, and learn,
but every parent buying an
internet	device	should	be	aware
that there are risks too, and think
about installing parental controls.
“The NSPCC has lots of resources
to help parents talk about online
issues so that they can help keep a
child safe and happy online. You
can	also	fi	nd	how	other	parents
and children rate popular social
networking	sites	for	safety.”

TAKING CARe oN The hIllS
For dedicated rescue teams who literally save
lives some of the recent events on the local hills
have been – as one account frankly admits –
“challenging”.
You probably remember the
January incident in which a
couple and their dog survived by
hunkering down in an emergency
shelter overnight when the
weather suddenly took a turn for
the worse.
Not long after two walkers on
Ben Lomond were rescued from
a mountain summit by helicopter,
while another pair were brought
to safety by the crack Scottish
Mountain Rescue Loch Lomond
team, and unfortunately it’s not
impossible other incidents may
have happened – on Lomond hills
or farther north – by the time this
issue appears.
All of which brings into sharp
focus the eternal question of
why some people feel the urge
to tackle the Scottish countryside
in the most unforgiving and
unpredictable weather.
Sometimes even well-planned
adventures can end in tragedy,
but it’s certainly the case that
those who are properly prepared
and make sensible decisions
about when to go on a particular
route have the best chance of
never needing the services of
a rescue squad. On the other
hand warnings were issued by
mountaineering leaders for
people to check detailed weather
forecasts before taking to the hills,
and clearly in some cases walkers
who arguably should have known
better risked becoming the latest
unnecessary victims of the fickle
Scottish winter weather.
One experienced rescue expert
observed, trenchantly, that
anyone thinking of embarking
on a winter escapade in dodgy
weather needs to “ask questions
of themselves” before setting off.
Local rescue men and Forth Valley
Police have recently teamed up
to produce a simple but effective
guide to how to prepare for a
day on the hills in winter weather
– not long, but definitely worth
viewing.
It’s on Youtube at www.youtube.

The old INN
The bad news is that the Carbeth Inn won’t be a
pub any more - that concept is simply no longer
viable – but the good news is that it’s set for a
new lease of life
Balmaha entrepreneurs David and
Stuart Fraser have acquired the
inn, on the road between Drymen
and Milngavie, which before
Christmas was up for sale and
appeared certain to disappear for
good.
We don’t know if legendary cattle
rustler Rob Roy McGregor was
a regular there in the early 18th
century – Sir Walter Scott certainly
thought he must have been – but
it’s right in the middle of the
old bandit’s one-time heartland,
and is one of a handful of pubs
that can truly be called “iconic”.
Now the team at Balmaha’s Oak
Tree Inn are delighted that a
venue which could simply have
disappeared is set to be morphed
into a new venture that will be
more in tune with the tastes of
the modern age.
The plan is to spend the next 12
months developing a completely
new business, which will also have
a new name when it reopens.
We’ve no idea what they plan to
do with the site, but it would be
surprising if existing successes at
Balmaha, notably the St Mocha
coffee shop, weren’t part of the
package.
Despite the lack of information
so far (why give the plan away
in advance?), a concept well-
calculated to appear to tourists
– main market Glasgow – is
overwhelmingly likely.
Quality accommodation in a
beauty spot a short drive from the
city, and in an area where there’s
a conspicuous lack of same, is
surely also on the cards.
It’s been speculated locally that
cycle hire and a farm shop could
be among the attractions in
future, but we’ll just have to wait
and see.

This month:
Run like fun
in the park
It’s just one month since more than 200 hardy
souls took part in the Shortbread Run, which
was organised by West Dunbartonshire Athletics
Club in Balloch Country Park on January 2.
Now it’s maybe time for some
of us to rekindle all those good
intentions we had at the very
start of the year by taking part in
the regular Run ‘n Park event at
9.30am every Saturday.
There will be one missing
ingredient, of course, and that’s
the complimentary packet of
Walkers shortbread the new year
runners were awarded (yes, that’s
why it’s called ‘the Shortbread
Run’), but never mind – on the
plus there’s the chance to meet
old friends and makes new ones
in one of the area’s most convivial
and fun community events.
The January run involved a two
mile walk, jog or run, so you don’t
have to be an Olympic champion
to take part – it’s all about getting
exercise at a pace you can manage,
and enjoying the company of
fellow walkers, joggers or runners
at the same time.
Just turn up at the main gate on
Balloch Road for this free event
– and remember under-11’s must
be accompanied by a parent or
guardian.

OPENING HOURS
10am-6pm Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm Sunday
A recent trial of “multi-
parametric” MRI scanners
to help specialists diagnose
prostate cancer has been
announced as a giant leap
forward in identifying
cancerous areas in
the gland earlier
and more
accurately,
and may
become
available
in coming
years.
A quarter of
all new cancers
in men are
caused by prostate
cancer, and men have
a 1 in 8 risk of developing
it. There is no simple test for
it, so doctors depend upon
men reporting troublesome
symptoms.
These include problems
passing urine, including
reduced flow, dribbling or
pain, blood in the urine, or
sometimes even persisting
back pain. Similarly testicular
cancer diagnosis
depends upon
men checking
themselves
and reporting
lumps early.
This can be
embarrassing
to discuss, but
doctors are
used to talking
about these things
and would prefer
you discuss things early, to
rule out cancer, or if necessary
arrange early treatments,
which with new advances are
becoming steadily
more effective.

In Victorian times it
was considered bad luck
to sign a Valentine s
Day card.
Girls of medieval times ate
bizarre foods on St. Valentine's
Day to make them dream
of their future
spouse.
In Finland Valentine s Day is called
Ystävänpäivä, which translates into
“Friend s day”. It's more about
remembering your buddies than

The use of CPR dates all the way back to 1740, yet even
today, many individuals don’t know how to perform it.
Given properly and immediately to sudden cardiac arrest
victims, CPR can save lives.
DEFENDING A
SOVIET SPY
Great to see the Concord
Community Cinema back in
action, with a great film to enjoy
on February 3.
It’s Bridge	of	Spies, starring Tom
Hanks, Mark Rylance and Alan
Alda in a 2016 Oscar winner.
During the Cold War, an American
lawyer is recruited to defend an
arrested Soviet spy in court, and
then help the CIA facilitate an
exchange of the spy for the Soviet
captured American U2 spy plane
pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

This month: PRIVATE TENANTS
All tenants have the right to
live in a property that is fit
for human habitation. The
expectations for this can be
wide ranging. However, at a
minimum the structure and
services should be in
a reasonable state
of repair. It is the
landlord's duty
to ensure this
standard is
maintained. In
the event you
have concerns
regarding your
property you
should raise them
directly with your
landlord and allow them the
opportunity of addressing the
possible problem. However,
thereafter, under S.22(1) of
the Housing (Scotland) Act
2006, private tenants have
the remedy of applying
for a Repairing Standard
Enforcement Order (RSEO).
This order, if granted, will
require the landlord to carry
out the necessary repair work
within a specified time scale.
The order is registered against
the title deeds and will
not be revoked
until the work
has been
certified as
completed. In
circumstances
where a
landlord
simply refuses
to comply with
the order the local
council can be asked
to carry out the work. They
will in turn recover the cost
from the landlord, who will
also receive a fine for non
compliance. The tenant could
also be granted rent relief of
up to 90% until the work
is completed.

A poster designed
by a Primary 7 pupil
from Dumbarton’s
Knoxland Primary
has won top
prize in West
Dunbartonshire
Council’s Road
Safety Calendar
competition for
2017.
Heather McDaid’s colourful
design and effective slogan is
aimed at reminding all drivers
to take care on country roads.
With statistics showing that
55 per cent of road deaths
in Scotland happen on country roads – and that
most are the result of speeding and loss of control
– Heather’s message about keeping a steady pace is
reckoned to be great advice to all drivers.
Heather was presented with her award and trophy
by deputy education convener Councillor John
Mooney, while Knoxland Primary head teacher Mrs
Helen Brown was also presented with the Road
Safety Calendar Competition trophy for the school.
The 2017 Road Safety Calendar – featuring
Heather’s design – will be distributed to all
schools, council offices,
community education
centres, libraries and
health centres and all
the winning entries will
be on display at the
libraries throughout
West Dunbartonshire in
the first few months of
2017.
Councillor Mooney
said: “We	had	some
fantastic entries for the
competition	and	the
pupils	came	up	with
some	excellent	designs
and	messages	for	what	is
a	very	important	topic.
“Heather’s	was	selected
as	the	overall	winner
because	as	well	as
being eye-catching in
its	design,	it	includes	an	effective	slogan	that	will
resonate	with	people	who	see	her	poster.”
Infrastructure and regeneration convener
Councillor Patrick McGlinchey said: “Thank you
to	every	child	who	entered	this	contest	and	big
congratulations	to	Heather	for	her	winning
design.
“The	message	we	are	so	keen	to	get	across	to	drivers
is	to	stay	safe	for	their	own	sake	and	for	the	sake
of other road users and pedestrians – and Heather’s
poster	will	help	us	deliver	that	important	message.”

BANd’S pIpING hoT yeAR
Dumbarton and District
Band are set for a 2017
season to remember,
thanks to last year’s key
announcement about
the reinstatement of
the Grade 2 Band.
It’s to be led by Pipe Major
William Brown and Leading
Drummer James Brown, who are
both committed and experienced
players.
They have played extensively in all
grades – most recently in Grade
2 – and are looking forward to
taking Dumbarton and District
back into the prize list.
As a group which works hard
to bring new players on board,
with a highly active youth
development wing, this most
inclusive of pipe bands seems
certain to have at least as busy
and active a season as 2016 –
when the undoubted highlight
was the 17th Scottish Pipe Band
Championships at Levengrove
Park.
More than 25,000 people
gathered at Levengrove Park
to enjoy the spectacle of music,
dancing, culture and colour
hosted by West Dunbartonshire
Council.
A record 141 bands and 48
Drum Majors competed in a
free spectacle which for sheer
atmosphere arguably isn’t
equaled anywhere else.
It may seem a long time till
summer, but training for this
year’s big one, and all the
other contests along the way, is
continuing apace.
The band practises on a Monday
and Wednesday evening from
7pm until 9.30pm at its band hall
in Station Street, Renton, and
is proud to be one of the few
remaining teaching bands – so
new starts will be given tuition
and guidance.
If you would like to be part of a
great team, and improve your
piping and drumming talent, it
might be well worth finding out
more.
You can get in touch with
Dumbarton and District Pipe Band
on Facebook, or phone Duncan
Campbell on 07954 428394 or
John Ponsonby on 07715 874170.

GroupsWheel oF FoRTuNe ABSeIl
West Dunbartonshire’s SSPCA rescue and
rehoming centre is one of the area’s favourite
worthy causes, and fundraising abseils from the
Titan Crane are popular.
But if you’ve “done the Crane”
already and are up for a new
adventure you might just be
interested in booking a place
for another challenge ... on the
mighty Falkirk Wheel.
There are limited spaces
available for the first ever
fundraiser there, which is on
Saturday, April 22.
An excursion to Falkirk in spring
could be an enjoyable change of
scene from the local area.
However if you can’t make that
date you may want to pencil in
a future date, and maybe even
plan a grand slam involving the
Crane, the Wheel and (another
existing favourite) the Forth Rail
Bridge.
Superintendent Sharon Comrie
said, “It’s a fantastic challenge
for	anyone	who	wants	to	do
something	fun	and	memorable
to	help	animals	in	their	local
area.
“Those	who	have	completed
abseils for the charity in
previous years have said that it’s
an	amazing	experience	and	one
they’ll	never	forget.	“There	will
be	a	team	of
highly skilled instructors
to ensure participants are
equipped	with	everything
they need.
“We rely on public support to
continue	our	work	rescuing
abused, abandoned and injured
animals	so	every	penny	and
pound raised in sponsorship
really does count.”
Titan Crane abseil veteran
Cheryl McLoughlan said: “I	was
terrified on the day but excited
too. I had never taken part in
anything like it before.
“That	moment	I	had	to	climb
over the side of the crane to
my	descent	was	pretty	scary,
but as soon as I got going I
was	loving	it!”
Anyone interested in taking
part in the abseil can call the
fundraising team on 03000
999 999 (option 4) or email
fundraising@scottishspca.org
for further information.

Local News | February 2017 3Visit our website at: communityadvertiser.co.uk | SpRING FeAST AT The loCh It’s been a long, miserable winter, but we’re now only weeks away from the first big springtime attraction of the season. venue and the area’s already booming reputation as a prime source of Scottish culinary expertise and fine fare at its most exciting. Nobody is going to notice any April showers at this celebration of all that’s excellent about the area’s finest produce, because on past form the cookery demonstrations and food stalls, music and games will again be a recipe for what’s already a major local annual crowd-puller. Springfest at Lomond Shores was an unqualified success last year, attracting people from all over the area and beyond. Now planning is well advanced for this year’s spectacular, and a still better line-up of chefs, special events and entertainment is planned for the two-day spectacular on April 2 and 3. It’s only the second of its kind, but has already garnered support from top food providers across Scotland, thanks to the flagship Best of all it’s a family day which has plenty to amuse younger visitors while the grown-ups consider the finer points of food you won’t find in just any high street retailer. While foodie writers tend to concentrate on the up market city bistros they know so well local residents don’t have to look any farther than West Dunbartonshire for cuisine fit for a king – and for added interest can enjoy meeting chefs and food producers in person. They’re the sort of people who are happy to pass on their expertise, and to discuss with fellow enthusiasts all the work and craft that goes into the production of fabulous fare. If you’re a fan of Masterchef and similar programmes you might think producing top class dishes is an angst-ridden slog, full of near-disasters and collapsing vol-au-vents, but in the comfort of your own home you can easily aspire to be “very good” without having to match the sort of quality you’d expect in a top restaurant by absorbing some relatively simple tips on preparation and how best to use ingredients – chances are the height of your ambition may be a great dinner party for a few friends. More information on the final line-up will be released shortly, but meanwhile maybe put that first weekend in April in your diary as a must-do local day out. • 4. February 2017 | Local News 4 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717 035 BIG plANS FoR The CASTle A masterplan whose key local elements include a major boost for Balloch Castle and the village has been given a crucial green light. Named ‘LIVE Park’, the Plan outlines an ambitious vision for making Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park an attractive and viable place for young people and families, while also providing a base for businesses to start and grow – and developing amenities for visitors. The scheme follows detailed consultation, and in local terms will include a plan to bring listed Balloch Castle back into use. In a related move it will also seek to make improvements to Balloch village centre, with the new development linked to Lomond Shores. Following extensive engagement and consultation during the process to prepare the Plan, it has now been formally adopted by the National Park Authority as its Local Development Plan, the legal document to determine all planning decisions in the National Park. The Plan will be updated every five years. Gordon Watson, chief executive of the Park said: “The National Park is an amazing place and a special landscape with so much to offer. “LIVE Park sets out the opportunities for it to continue to thrive and develop sensitively as a place for people to live, invest, visit and experience over the next ten years. “We’ve worked really closely with people and organisations to fi nd out how they want to see that happen.” Stuart Mearns, the Park’s head of rural development and planning, said: “We are already seeing an increase in developer interest in key locations including Balloch and Callander as well as some of our smaller communities, such as Luss where new affordable housing is currently being built. “Our focus next year will be to use the Plan as the basis for securing continued investment in the National Park.” The council is also heavily involved in local development, with plans which are to include a Dumbarton waterfront walkway, as well as two public squares in Balloch. Local News | February 2017 5Visit our website at: communityadvertiser.co.uk | JAMeS TAKeS The helM A keen yachtsmen whose CV includes a former role as chief executive of the Royal Yachting Association has been elected to a top job with the National Park. James Stuart, who is managing director of Entrepreneurial Scotland, brings a wealth of experience in sport, recreation and tourism to his new post as convener, and takes up his post on March 1. His career has also included service as an officer with a Scottish regiment for eight years. The scale and complexity of the task of maintaining and further developing the area’s prime natural asset is possibly well-suited to someone capable of devising far-reaching and pragmatic solutions to challenging problems. Meanwhile his yachting experience will surely be invaluable when it comes to dealing with Loch Lomond itself. These days he’s a member of the National Tourism Strategy (Tourism Scotland 2020) Strategic Leadership Group, and was first appointed to the National Park Board in 2015. He said: “The National Park has come a long way in recent years with numerous successes and gaining national recognition. “We are also about to deliver some key projects that will secure long- term, environmental, community and economic benefi ts. “These projects will characterise much of our work over the next few years and are crucial to the continued progress and impact of the Park.” He added: “As convener I aim to lead the organisation in a way that is mindful of these big projects whilst also looking to the future." The current convener, Linda McKay, is stepping down in February 2017 after serving the maximum two terms. She said: “I would like to congratulate James on his election as convener of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and look forward to working with him over the next couple of months to ensure a smooth transition.” The National Park's new convenor James Stuart, pictured with his predecessor Linda McKay, who will be stepping down this month. • 6. February 2017 | Local News 6 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717 035 Children’s Hospice Association Scotland’s Robin House in Balloch is able to keep delivering exemplary results because of the public’s generosity – but it needs volunteers too. CHAS is currently trying to get out the message that local people with some time to spare can make a difference to children’s lives by getting involved in one of several flexible ways. A spokeswoman tells us: “Volunteers help us reach more families than we could possibly achieve without their support, and their enthusiasm and energetic support for the work of CHAS is welcomed by our children, their families, and our staff alike. “When you volunteer with us you’ll receive all the training and support you’ll need. We will also cover your travel expenses and you will get the opportunity to attend any events that are happening throughout the year.” She adds: “We appreciate that successful volunteering is not just about how it benefits CHAS, it’s also about making sure that our volunteers obtain the most they can from the experience. “Just as we strive to honour our commitment to you by providing you with a suitable volunteering role, we expect all our volunteers to do the same for us. If, for example, you are unwell or realise you are unable to continue your volunteering commitment to CHAS, we ask you to let us know as soon as possible. Opportunities to volunteer are “very flexible”, and the team can work with you to find something that suits you – and, if you like, your colleagues. You might be working with the sort of company that likes group endeavour, and wants to support a local cause, and in that case your firm might consider becoming a corporate volunteer for CHAS. Under-18’s can get involved in fundraising too." Local News | February 2017 7Visit our website at: communityadvertiser.co.uk | MeeT uS AT The FouNTAIN One of the area’s most prized public spaces is Levengrove Park, an amenity at the heart of the community that never seems to change. However in a couple of months time there will be some important innovations taking place there, and this month the Friends of Levengrove Park group are aiming to let people know exactly what’s afoot. The council recently gained £2.8 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to finance a much-needed upgrade, and the Friends will be explaining how that cash is going to be spent to anyone who is interested in find out out more. The group has a walk in the park event on Saturday, February 11, all welcome, with the aim of introducing people who thought they knew all about the facility on their doorstep to some of its more interesting features. It’s worth getting the big picture, because the upgrading work is going to take a year to complete, starting in May, and ought to make a big difference. The restoration programme is to include a new pavilion, the restoration of Kilmahew Fountain, improvements to St. Serf’s Church, a new children’s playpark, improved footpaths and lighting, and interpretation panels – and quite a lot more besides. The Friends of Levengrove Park, in association with West Dunbartonshire Council Greenspace department, are keen to keep the community up to date with developments. Friends chairwoman Linda Adam said: “The walk in the park will give the community an opportunity to meet members of the Friends group and the project manager and get detailed information relating to various aspects of the restoration project”. It starts at 2pm from the Kilmahew Fountain – let’s hope it’s dry – and should be a fun way of getting the lowdown on how this familiar part of town life is going to be improved. The championship race will be 1,000m, while an Ice Gala on the same day will offer races of 50m to 500m. Rules stipulate that the water temperature must be below 5C. The event is one of many IISA ice swims that take place throughout the winter in Europe. The International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) was formed in 2009 by South African Ram Barkai with a vision to formalise swimming in icy water. There are now almost 50 country members. Ram says: “IISA’s passion – and the people that swim in our events – is to swim in icy waters in every location possible around our globe.” Rules for IISA events ensure maximum safety measures. These regulate water temperatures – 5C or less – distance, time and conditions. The Ice Mile is considered the ultimate race distance, while a 1km event was introduced in 2014 to allow more people to compete. Swimmers can wear only goggles, a swim cap and standard swimming costume. Pauline Barker, of IISA Great Britain, is organising the event in partnership with Balloch- based open water swim coaching company, Swim 4 Miles. She says: “The location is perfect for Scotland’s first ice swimming championships. So many international ice swimmers say they want to come to Scotland.” This year, the race entries sold out in only a few days but next year Pauline hopes the event will be bigger. She says: “We encourage people to come along to watch and enjoy the gala entertainments, even if they are not swimming. There will be a ceilidh after the swimming.” See www.iceswimminggb.co.uk and www.swim4miles.co.uk. Chilly Loch Lomond will welcome 100 daring non-wetsuit swimmers at Scotland’s first ice swimming championships this month. • 10. February 2017 | Local News 10 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717 035 INTeRNeT SAFeTy IS VITAl Just a few weeks ago we saw the predictable deluge of electronic gadgets find their way into children’s festive stockings – but are we exercising due caution? The NSPCC is urging local parents to talk to their children about online safety if they bought them internet devices as Christmas presents, following a huge rise in contacts to Childline about online abuse. It takes several forms, most of them well publicised, and their effects range in scale from deeply distressing to downright dangerous. Unfortunately the bad news is that reports of online abuse are on the up, and last year took up a third of all contacts about online issues – including bullying and safety. Some children contacted Childline because they felt trapped by their situation, because they felt guilty and ashamed, were frightened to talk to an adult about the issue, were being blackmailed, or were considering meeting up in person. Some wrongly feel that they are to blame when things go wrong, and are afraid to speak out. The NSPCC recommends parents talk regularly and openly with their children and has a host of simple tips and advice on its website, at www.nspcc. org.uk, for example the need to talk about what is and is not acceptable to share online. Matt Forde, National Head of Service for NSPCC Scotland said: “The web can be a fantastic place for children and young people to socialise, explore their interests, and learn, but every parent buying an internet device should be aware that there are risks too, and think about installing parental controls. “The NSPCC has lots of resources to help parents talk about online issues so that they can help keep a child safe and happy online. You can also fi nd how other parents and children rate popular social networking sites for safety.” Matt Forde, National Head of Service for NSPCC Scotland (inset), encourages parents to visit the NSPCC website for tips and advice on internet safety. festive stockings – but are we exercising website, at org.uk need to talk about what is and is not acceptable to share online. • 11. Local News | February 2017 11Visit our website at: communityadvertiser.co.uk | TAKING CARe oN The hIllS For dedicated rescue teams who literally save lives some of the recent events on the local hills have been – as one account frankly admits – “challenging”. You probably remember the January incident in which a couple and their dog survived by hunkering down in an emergency shelter overnight when the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse. Not long after two walkers on Ben Lomond were rescued from a mountain summit by helicopter, while another pair were brought to safety by the crack Scottish Mountain Rescue Loch Lomond team, and unfortunately it’s not impossible other incidents may have happened – on Lomond hills or farther north – by the time this issue appears. All of which brings into sharp focus the eternal question of why some people feel the urge to tackle the Scottish countryside in the most unforgiving and unpredictable weather. Sometimes even well-planned adventures can end in tragedy, but it’s certainly the case that those who are properly prepared and make sensible decisions about when to go on a particular route have the best chance of never needing the services of a rescue squad. On the other hand warnings were issued by mountaineering leaders for people to check detailed weather forecasts before taking to the hills, and clearly in some cases walkers who arguably should have known better risked becoming the latest unnecessary victims of the fickle Scottish winter weather. One experienced rescue expert observed, trenchantly, that anyone thinking of embarking on a winter escapade in dodgy weather needs to “ask questions of themselves” before setting off. Local rescue men and Forth Valley Police have recently teamed up to produce a simple but effective guide to how to prepare for a day on the hills in winter weather – not long, but definitely worth viewing. • 12. 12 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717 035 February 2017 | Local News NeW lIFe FoR The old INN The bad news is that the Carbeth Inn won’t be a pub any more - that concept is simply no longer viable – but the good news is that it’s set for a new lease of life Balmaha entrepreneurs David and Stuart Fraser have acquired the inn, on the road between Drymen and Milngavie, which before Christmas was up for sale and appeared certain to disappear for good. We don’t know if legendary cattle rustler Rob Roy McGregor was a regular there in the early 18th century – Sir Walter Scott certainly thought he must have been – but it’s right in the middle of the old bandit’s one-time heartland, and is one of a handful of pubs that can truly be called “iconic”. Now the team at Balmaha’s Oak Tree Inn are delighted that a venue which could simply have disappeared is set to be morphed into a new venture that will be more in tune with the tastes of the modern age. The plan is to spend the next 12 months developing a completely new business, which will also have a new name when it reopens. We’ve no idea what they plan to do with the site, but it would be surprising if existing successes at Balmaha, notably the St Mocha coffee shop, weren’t part of the package. Despite the lack of information so far (why give the plan away in advance?), a concept well- calculated to appear to tourists – main market Glasgow – is overwhelmingly likely. Quality accommodation in a beauty spot a short drive from the city, and in an area where there’s a conspicuous lack of same, is surely also on the cards. It’s been speculated locally that cycle hire and a farm shop could be among the attractions in future, but we’ll just have to wait and see. What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month: Run like fun in the park It’s just one month since more than 200 hardy souls took part in the Shortbread Run, which was organised by West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club in Balloch Country Park on January 2. Now it’s maybe time for some of us to rekindle all those good intentions we had at the very start of the year by taking part in the regular Run ‘n Park event at 9.30am every Saturday. There will be one missing ingredient, of course, and that’s the complimentary packet of Walkers shortbread the new year runners were awarded (yes, that’s why it’s called ‘the Shortbread Run’), but never mind – on the plus there’s the chance to meet old friends and makes new ones in one of the area’s most convivial and fun community events. The January run involved a two mile walk, jog or run, so you don’t have to be an Olympic champion to take part – it’s all about getting exercise at a pace you can manage, and enjoying the company of fellow walkers, joggers or runners at the same time. Just turn up at the main gate on Balloch Road for this free event – and remember under-11’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A quarter of all new cancers in men are caused by prostate cancer, and men have a 1 in 8 risk of developing it. There is no simple test for it, so doctors depend upon men reporting troublesome symptoms. These include problems passing urine, including reduced flow, dribbling or pain, blood in the urine, or sometimes even persisting back pain. Similarly testicular cancer diagnosis depends upon men checking themselves and reporting lumps early. This can be embarrassing to discuss, but doctors are used to talking about these things and would prefer you discuss things early, to rule out cancer, or if necessary arrange early treatments, which with new advances are becoming steadily more effective.

  • 20. DEFENDING A SOVIET SPY Great to see the Concord Community Cinema back in action, with a great film to enjoy on February 3. It’s Bridge of Spies, starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance and Alan Alda in a 2016 Oscar winner. During the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers. For more information about forthcoming screenings at the Concord and how to obtain membership (which is ripping value) email concordcommunitycinema@ hotmail.com 20 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717 035 February 2017 | Legal Matters Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month: PRIVATE TENANTS All tenants have the right to live in a property that is fit for human habitation. The expectations for this can be wide ranging. However, at a minimum the structure and services should be in a reasonable state of repair. It is the landlord's duty to ensure this standard is maintained. In the event you have concerns regarding your property you should raise them directly with your landlord and allow them the opportunity of addressing the possible problem. However, thereafter, under S.22(1) of the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006, private tenants have the remedy of applying for a Repairing Standard Enforcement Order (RSEO). This order, if granted, will require the landlord to carry out the necessary repair work within a specified time scale. The order is registered against the title deeds and will not be revoked until the work has been certified as completed. In circumstances where a landlord simply refuses to comply with the order the local council can be asked to carry out the work. They will in turn recover the cost from the landlord, who will also receive a fine for non compliance. The tenant could also be granted rent relief of up to 90% until the work is completed. • E S T A B L I S H E D 1 9 3 6 • 01389 752944 www.ledgerwoods.co.uk Phone now to see how we can help you 01389 752944 ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS N E S T O R B U I L D I N G S E R V I C E S LT D Tel: 01389 755 755 Property Maintenance Extensions & Alterations Commercial Contracts PVC Windows & Doors 295 Main Street, Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, G83 0AW Local, Reliable, Professional Services for all types of joinery & building work FR EE ESTIM ATES Head along to the Scottish Cycling, Running and Outdoor Pursuits Show this March at the SECC, where you can take part in a range of exciting activities from our climbing walls, to cycling and running tracks to our new indoor e-mountain bike trail, Mini-Velodrome or Segway challenge! Local News | February 2017 27Visit our website at: communityadvertiser.co.uk | heATheR'S VITAl MeSSAGe A poster designed by a Primary 7 pupil from Dumbarton’s Knoxland Primary has won top prize in West Dunbartonshire Council’s Road Safety Calendar competition for 2017. Heather McDaid’s colourful design and effective slogan is aimed at reminding all drivers to take care on country roads. With statistics showing that 55 per cent of road deaths in Scotland happen on country roads – and that most are the result of speeding and loss of control – Heather’s message about keeping a steady pace is reckoned to be great advice to all drivers. Heather was presented with her award and trophy by deputy education convener Councillor John Mooney, while Knoxland Primary head teacher Mrs Helen Brown was also presented with the Road Safety Calendar Competition trophy for the school. The 2017 Road Safety Calendar – featuring Heather’s design – will be distributed to all schools, council offices, community education centres, libraries and health centres and all the winning entries will be on display at the libraries throughout West Dunbartonshire in the first few months of 2017. Councillor Mooney said: “We had some fantastic entries for the competition and the pupils came up with some excellent designs and messages for what is a very important topic. “Heather’s was selected as the overall winner because as well as being eye-catching in its design, it includes an effective slogan that will resonate with people who see her poster.” Infrastructure and regeneration convener Councillor Patrick McGlinchey said: “Thank you to every child who entered this contest and big congratulations to Heather for her winning design. “The message we are so keen to get across to drivers is to stay safe for their own sake and for the sake of other road users and pedestrians – and Heather’s poster will help us deliver that important message.” Heather McDaid, of Knoxland Primary, won the West Dunbartonshire Council’s Road Safety 2017 Calendar competition Household Tips CLEARA SLOWDRAIN When you notice your drain is starting to clog, a 1/2 cup of baking soda down it, followed by a 1/2 cup of vinegar. • 28. February 2017 | Local News 28 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717 035 BANd’S pIpING hoT yeAR Dumbarton and District Band are set for a 2017 season to remember, thanks to last year’s key announcement about the reinstatement of the Grade 2 Band. It’s to be led by Pipe Major William Brown and Leading Drummer James Brown, who are both committed and experienced players. They have played extensively in all grades – most recently in Grade 2 – and are looking forward to taking Dumbarton and District back into the prize list. As a group which works hard to bring new players on board, with a highly active youth development wing, this most inclusive of pipe bands seems certain to have at least as busy and active a season as 2016 – when the undoubted highlight was the 17th Scottish Pipe Band Championships at Levengrove Park. More than 25,000 people gathered at Levengrove Park to enjoy the spectacle of music, dancing, culture and colour hosted by West Dunbartonshire Council. A record 141 bands and 48 Drum Majors competed in a free spectacle which for sheer atmosphere arguably isn’t equaled anywhere else. It may seem a long time till summer, but training for this year’s big one, and all the other contests along the way, is continuing apace. The band practises on a Monday and Wednesday evening from 7pm until 9.30pm at its band hall in Station Street, Renton, and is proud to be one of the few remaining teaching bands – so new starts will be given tuition and guidance. If you would like to be part of a great team, and improve your piping and drumming talent, it might be well worth finding out more. You can get in touch with Dumbarton and District Pipe Band on Facebook, or phone Duncan Campbell on 07954 428394 or John Ponsonby on 07715 874170. But if you’ve “done the Crane” already and are up for a new adventure you might just be interested in booking a place for another challenge ... on the mighty Falkirk Wheel. There are limited spaces available for the first ever fundraiser there, which is on Saturday, April 22. An excursion to Falkirk in spring could be an enjoyable change of scene from the local area. However if you can’t make that date you may want to pencil in a future date, and maybe even plan a grand slam involving the Crane, the Wheel and (another existing favourite) the Forth Rail Bridge. Superintendent Sharon Comrie said, “It’s a fantastic challenge for anyone who wants to do something fun and memorable to help animals in their local area. “Those who have completed abseils for the charity in previous years have said that it’s an amazing experience and one they’ll never forget. “There will be a team of highly skilled instructors to ensure participants are equipped with everything they need. “We rely on public support to continue our work rescuing abused, abandoned and injured animals so every penny and pound raised in sponsorship really does count.” Titan Crane abseil veteran Cheryl McLoughlan said: “I was terrified on the day but excited too. I had never taken part in anything like it before. “That moment I had to climb over the side of the crane to my descent was pretty scary, but as soon as I got going I was loving it!” Anyone interested in taking part in the abseil can call the fundraising team on 03000 999 999 (option 4) or email fundraising@scottishspca.org for further information.
