What is an ESR?:
• An ESR is, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, in the
first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their
research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
• “Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date
when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark
on a doctorate, (either in the country in which the degree was obtained
or in the country in which the researcher is recruited) even if a doctorate
was never started or envisaged. Part-time research experience will be
counted pro-rata”
– ITN Fellow (=> fellowship from the European Commission)

8 Trainings:
• N° 1- Boot Camp: its main goal is to allow the ESRs and supervisors to
know eachother (team building), to provide them with technical
content:
• September 18th-20th
• N° 2-Opportunity Recognition (OR): its main goal is to develop an
entrepreneurial mindset and learn to think in terms of potential
products rather than “cool technologies”:
• First session on June 4th-8th and second session (date to be confirmed)
• N° 3- Year one workshop: research methods, which main goal is to
follow the progress of each ESR research project and to provide soft
skills training around the “How to do research” theme:
• January 2019
19. FogGuru’s Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)
19
• N° 4- Mid-thesis defenses: the goal is to allow the ESRs to reflect on
their own progress, to present a work plan of the remaining time of
their PhD studies, to get a feedback from external experts:
• February 2020
• N° 5-Business Modeling and Development (BMD): aims at training
the ESRs to the process of turning an innovative product or service
idea with a structured business model into a real business:
• February 2020
• N° 6- Year 2 workshop: linking with other disciplines, which aims at
allowing the ESRs to understand the relations between their own
research project and related scientific disciplines such as machine
learning, statistical analysis and business process management:
• October 2020
20. FogGuru’s Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)
20
• N° 7-Growth and Harvest (GH): its goal is to introduce ESRs to the
challenge of growing a business (locally and internationally) with
the related strategy, management, human resourcing and
financing issue:
• October 2020
• N°8- PhD defenses: to validate the scientific contributions of the
ESRs and to deliver doctorate degrees:
• August 2021 – October 2021
21. FogGuru’s Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)
21
Secondments:
• ITN-EID rule: each ESR has to spend at least 50% of his/her time with
one or more beneficiaries or partner organizations from the non-
academic sectors.
• Intern rules in the consortium:
– The ESRs will stay at the employer's premises for at least 9 to 12 months during
the first year of their contract,
– There aren't any short secondments so that the ESRs can really get involved in
their research and training activities,
– As organized in the first version of the Gantt, the ESRs will be divided in 2
groups during the Living-lab (2 consecutive periods of time in Valencia),
– The ESRs will finish their contract with their University's supervisor so that they
can have time to finish writing their PhD Thesis.
22. FogGuru’s Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)
22
Gantt Chart:
• Definition: a bar graph used to illustrate a project schedule.
• Gantt Chart Version 1: submitted with the project’s proposal
• Gantt Chart Version 2: reorganized and proposed according to the
ESRs’ contract starting date.
23. FogGuru’s Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)
23
Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP)
• A dynamic CV,
• Built in close collaboration with the supervisors,
• First version must be delivered in September,
