 Definition:
 A Settlement is defined as a place
which people live and where they carry out a
variety of activities residence, trade ,agriculture
and manufacturing.
 There are two types of settlements :
 Rural settlements
 Urban settlements
 The pattern of rural settlements can very
from a single farm to a cluster of houses ,
(dispersed, linear, nucleated) in the past
most of the population live in the rural areas.
 In 1903,97% population live in the rural
areas and in 1950 , 50% population live in
rural and 50% live in urban areas
 There is natural environments in the rural
areas
 In the form of village , surrounded by farms with
small population.
 Occupation such as farming , forestry fishing
,mining ,tourism
 Services provided are in limited range and
mostly for every day needs
 Close knit communities and the atmosphere is
quiet.
 Dominance of community feeling.
 Nucleated settlements
 it is compact or
closely built up area of houses
 In this types of village the general living areas
is distinct and separated from the
surrounding farms and pastures.
 These settlements may result from tendency of
clustering in a restricted area of dispersed
settlement
 One or more sections of society choose or is
forced to live a little away from the main cluster.
 Hamlet settlements
 these are fragmented into
several units physically separated from each
other bearing a common name
 These units are locally known as panna, para
Nayla, Dhani etc.

 Limited transportation available
 Social network can lead to strain in the case
of small town gossips
 Limited employment opportunities
 Slower social ,political ,progress
 Less immediately available social services
 The settlements that generally have a high
population which is mostly depends on non
-agricultural sectors are called urban
settlement.
 High population :
 mostly dependent on non agricultural sectors.
 Urban settlements are mostly nucleated
settlements
 The economic and cultural characteristics of
urban settlements are entirely different from the
rural regions
 The transition of population from rural agrarian
economy to urban industrial and service sector
economy is termed of urbanization
