2. Intro to Optics
History:
Ibn al-Haytham, father of optics.
Optics began with development of lenses by ancients
Egyptians and Mesopotamians.
Theories on light and vision.
What is Optics?
Optics is the branch of physics that studies the behavior and
properties of light and its interaction with matter.
Optics allows for a wide range of modern research topics.
3. Subfields of Optics?
Geometrical Optics, study of light as rays
Physical Optics, study of light as waves
Quantum Optics, study of light as particles
4. Geometrical Optics
In it we consider light as a ray and study its behavior.
So, when light is behaving as ray it shows two
behaviors:
Reflection:
Euclid , Three hundred BC
Explanation
Refraction:
Willebrord Snell
Explanation
6. Limitations of Geometrical optics
The image that is being
made on the black screen
because of interference of
light i.e. constructive
interference proving the
wave behavior of light
Physical optics.
7. Physical Optics
In it we consider light as a wave and study its
behavior. In physical optics light shows following
behaviors:
Interference
Diffraction
Polarization
