1. Topic To be Presented
History of Computers &
Computing
BY
ENGR. FARHIN JAVED
2. HISTORY
• One of the earliest machine designed and assist
people in calculations was the Abacus which is
still being used some hundred year after its
invention.
• In 1642 Blaise Pascal (French Mathematician)
invented an adding machine based on
mechanical gears in which numbers were
represented by the cogs on the wheel.
5. FATHER OF COMPUTER???
• English man Charles Babbage,
Invented in the 1830. That is called
Difference Engine.
• It was modified in future due to some
weak points it is called then
Analytical Engine.
6. DIFFERENCE ENGINE
• His Design contains the first key characteristics
of modern computers
• Input device
• Storage for numbers waiting to be processed.
• A processor or number calculator
• A unit to control the task and the sequence of its
calculations.
• An output device.
8. ANALYTICAL ENGINE
• The Analytical Engine was a proposed
mechanical general-purpose computer designed
by English mathematician and computer pioneer
Charles Babbage. It was first described in 1837
as the successor to Babbage's difference
engine, a design for a mechanical computer.
10. PUNCHED CARD
• Dr Herman Hollerith developed the first Electro-
mechanical punched card tabulator, which was
driven by electricity and could sort and select
data.
• This invention open the gate of Modern data
processing and Hollerith went on to find the
Tabulating Machine Company , Which later
become IBM (International Business Machine).

12. DEVELOPMENT
• In 1936 Howard Aiken of Harvard
University convinced Thomas Watson of
IBM to invest 1 million dollar in the
development of electromechanical version
of Babbage’s analytical engine.
• The Harvard Mark 1 is completed in 1944
and was 8 feet high and 55 feet long.

15. DEVELOPMENT
• At about the same time (1930) John
Atanasoff of State University and his
assistant Clifford Berry built first digital
computer.
• ABC (Atanasoff Berry Comp) .
• This machine was basically a small
calculator.
