HELD AT CALALEY PRIMARY SCHOOL, GALKACYO, GALMUDUG STATE, SOMALIA.
Contextual Summary
Educate Girls, End Poverty’ is a project implemented by a Relief International -led consortium whose
goal is to enroll more girls in school, inspire them to stay in school, and make sure they graduate school
with the knowledge that enables them to break the cycle of poverty.
The project is benefitingmarginalizedgirls, aged 6 to 19, from urban poor, rural, andinternallydisplaced
(IDP) populations in Puntland.
Educate Girls, End Poverty focuses on increasing student enrolment, quality of education, and retention
rates, thus equipping students with the tools they need to succeed. The project is expected to benefit
7,750 marginalized girls at selected primary and secondary schools in South Central Somalia.
The deliverables are comprised of interlocking demand and supply-side interventions designed to
address barriers to education entry and retention, as well as limitations on the ability of existing
institutions to meet the needs of Somalia’s most educationally disadvantaged girls.

Among the ongoing activities aimed to achieve the overall projects output are multifaceted among
them is supplementary school feeding program to 8 schools in Galgudud and Mudug region which are
currently receiving main meals from WFP among others cereals and take home rations.
The supplementary feedings mainly includes vegetables, fruits and oils. In the course of the projects,
representatives from the school among others CECs, store keepers, cooks and mother groups were
trained on basic health, hygiene, sanitations including hand washing topics.
In the light of above, Global hand washing campaign was successfully organized on 15th
of October
2015. The event which was for the first time marked in the region was held in Galkacyo at Calanley
Primary school.
Among the many participants were: MoE feeding focal person, CECs,
Parents, teachers, mother groups, youth groups promoting health and pupils from Abdullahi Ciise, Jamac

seed, Gaheyr and Calanley schools. This report therefore covers how the event was organizedandheld at
Calanley Primary School in Galkacyo, Galmudug State of Somalia.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of the Global Hand washing event was to mark the event in the region for the first
time and also share the globalized designated theme of the event with the participants to contribute to
and reduce incidences of diarrhea and pneumonia through sensitizing the public particularly children by
conveying the message through arts including drama, poets and speeches from teachers and students
Road to the Global Hand washing event were pre-planned in three phases as recommended in three
phases.
8 teachers, who were selected from the four feeding schools, were given an introduced on the objective
of the training with vital emphasis on the part of promoting the culture of hand washing at all time.

Additionally, the teachers were reminded on the importance of the hygiene and sanitations topics in
and out of the school. They were then presentedon the main topics that require special attention during
the trainings including Diseases Transmission (chain of contamination) - the teachers were trained on
communicable diseases with aided illustrations.
The session was then followed by topics on various bad practices that are common in schools and how
to prevent them, the participants discussed the various ways they can promote hygiene through child-
to-child approach. The trained was summed up after the teacher’s defined training packaged suitable.
Introductoryphase took place at Calanleyprimary school where teachers were trained on issues related
global hand washing event including when the event marked the reasons for marking the event,
successive themes universalized themes aimed to promote the importance of hand washing and then
enlisted various ways they can pass the message to the pupils. Finally the teachers gave and
recommended methodologies that can be used to train the selected students the next day.
The second day, teachers selected pupils from grade one to eight and trained them at their respective
schools

The teachers understandably, selected students clubs representing grade one to eight for the training
since they are well organized compared to identification of students with the short period given. The
girls rehearsed the various roles given supervised by their female mentors.
Dissemination of IEC materials
Sensitizing materials for the training sessions in schools and the day of the event were handed over to
the teachers such including banners and posters and T/shirt
Media sensitization
SNTV were invited for recording and broadcasting one day before the event

Organization
The event which was well organized by the teachers, Calanley primary school was organized in three
phase approach:
1) 1 day training for teachers
2) 1 day training for students
3) Hand washing campaign
Welcome and Introductions

Distinguished guests, parents, teachers, mother groups and other participants were welcomed after a
word of prayer from one of the pupils. The participants were welcomed by the host head teacher Mr.
Abdirashid Amin Day in his speech he thanked CISP for allowing to host the event at Calanley Primary
School.

Secondly, acknowledging the presence of people, teachers and pupils from the other schools he
described his gratitude for making to the school he then challenged the participating head teachers to
continue and adapt the importance of invitingschools to one school will enhance the society to interact
and build relationship among the pupils that can even allow exchange of academic ideas.

Additionally, he explained the importance of hygiene and sanitations in Islamic view; he additionally
encouraged pupils to avoid stagnant water and sewages to prevent diseases. He finally welcomed the
master of ceremony who invitedCalanleyGirl club members who performed a drama on sanitations and
hygiene.
The girls who were well dressed up with messaged T/shirts, attracted the participants who applauded as
the girls divided themselves into two groups. One group sensitizing and encouraging the other, These
were then followed by performance from the other schools with underlining the importance of hand
washing using a soap then a shampoo and then ashes.

After the performance of all the drama teams, the master of ceremony invited me, I the school feeding
program officer, of which I have passed greetings to all members that attended the ceremonyof global
hand washing on behalf of CISP team, I then welcomed the various participants and the drama team
from the four school feedings.

I then gave background information of the successive global hand washing events, the various themes
associated not forgetting the October 15th
Global Hand Washing theme (raise your hands). Additionally I
touched on when and the importance of washing the hands. I then encouraged parents, teachers CECs
and mother groups to spread the message in order to promote sanitations and hygiene in the school
and at home. I finally left the podium with round of applause from the participants.
From me i handover to School Feeding focal person form the MoE, was then invited to the podium to
pass messages on behalf of the ministry. Mr Isxal who is well known for his loud vocal, passed his

salutations on behalf of the Ministry to the participants, he then thanked CISP for organizing the Global
Hand Washing event at Calanley primary school. Mr Isxal then explained the reason for marking the
event at the school level, the importance of hand washingand overall hygiene and sanitations including
GHD helps raise awareness of the importance of washing with soap, but it also makes it fun for
children to get involved.
Hand washingwith soap is extremely effective and the most inexpensive way to prevent diarrhoea
and acute respiratory infections
It is important to turn hand washing into a habit
Hand washing is usually integrated together with other sanitation interventions as part of water,
sanitation and hygiene

Contents and methodologies will be designed by the teachers during the 1 day training session for
teachers. The training for students in each school will include a presentation to be done during the 15
October event on the lessons learnt. The presentation will be done through drama performances,
drawings, simulations….

The final sensitizing day will be arranged in 3 phases:
1) Teachers will select students and design presentations such as drama plays, or poems around hand
washing.
2) 15 October: - students from class 1 – 8 will perform their presentations. The best presentation will
be awarded
