2. INTRODUCTION
“Education should be started with Mathematics.
For it forms well designed brains that are able to
reason right. It is even admitted that those who
have studied Mathematics during their Younger
days should be trusted, for they have acquired
solid bases for arguing which become to them a
sort of second nature.’’
(Ibn Khaldun, al-Muqaddima born in 1332,Tunis)
3. It is sometimes difficult for students to appreciate
the importance of Mathematics. They often find
the subject boring and hard to understand.
Mathematics is not just a subject on your time-
table but a tool we use in everyday life.
Math is everywhere and yet, we may not recognize
it because it doesn't look like the math we did in
school. But math is present in our world all the
time in the workplace, in our homes, and in life in
general.
4. Mathematics is the only language shared by all human
beings regardless of culture, religion, or gender. Pi is still
approximately 3.14159 regardless of what country you are
in. Adding up the cost of a basket full of groceries
involves the same math process regardless of whether
the total is expressed in dollars, rubles, or yen. It is what
links ancient scholars and medieval merchants,
astronauts and artists, peasants and presidents
7. Cooking: The Idea Of Proportion
For a chocolate cake: 5 eggs, Âľ
cup of sugar, ½ cup of
vegetable oil,...
This recipe will yield a mouth-
watering cake. If you want to
make more cakes, you'll have
to increase the amount of each
ingredient listed in the recipe.
You'll also need to make sure
that the relationship between
the ingredients stays the same.
You’ll need to understand
proportion for this otherwise
the result wont be edible.
17. Population Growth
A crucial difference
between money and
population is that
money can increase
without limits while
Population can’t.
18. Other Applications
• The physical sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Engineering)
• The life and health sciences (Biology, Psychology,
Pharmacy, Nursing, Optometry)
• The social science including, Anthropology,
communications, Economics, Linguistics, Education,
Geography.
• The tech sciences like Computer Science, Networking,
Software Development.
• Business and Commerce.
• Medicine.
• Actuarial Science, used by insurance companies.
19. Conclusion
Using Math we can explain the mysteries of
the universe or the secrets of DNA. We
can understand the forces of planetary
motion, discover cures for catastrophic
diseases, or calculate the distance from
Boston to Bangkok. We can make
chocolate chip cookies or save money for
retirement. We can build computers and
transfer information across globe.
20. Math is not just for calculus majors. It’s for
all of us. And it’s not just about pondering
imaginary numbers or calculating difficult
equations. It’s about making better daily
decisions and hopefully, leading richer,
fuller lives.
