The worldwide interest in FIWARE is growing, but it has steep learning curves. Moreover, the support for some enabling technologies, like Blockchain, IoT and Cybersecurity, is at its initial phase or not exactly user-friendly for non-programmers. In analogy to the “cosmologic” FIWARE’s terminology, FIWARE Universe aims at extending the “universe” of possible applications and potential users of the FIWARE world. The main purpose of FIWARE Universe is to break down the entry barriers to the FIWARE ecosystem and its integration with the emerging technologies in a simple and as immediate way as possible. FIWARE Universe may become a reference for the FIWARE community for the development of smart apps, and at the same time for the development of commercial business apps for the exploitation of the implemented services.
To make programming within everyone's reach, we developed FIWARE Universe following a visual, "no-coding" approach. The "source code", made up of Node-RED1 nodes and flows wired together, drastically shortens the distance between the customer who supplies the requirements and the developers who implement them. FIWARE Universe is both an innovative methodological approach and a software solution for interoperability and rapid prototyping. A first set of PoC has been developed within various European projects. The fields of application so far have been the IoT, for the harmonization of monitoring data, and the blockchain, for the so-called “data notarization”. Great attention is also paid to Cybersecurity, always implemented through FIWARE GEs. As future plans, we aim at the refinement of the framework, its deployment on the Cloud and its exploitation in other fields, e.g., Big Data.
