---- Cloud computing has now become the new normal for both private and the public sector : it has driven a major shift among organizations of all types to adopt scalable, cost-efficient cloud infrastructure.
---- This allows for greater speed and flexibility than was ever thought possible, and it is ushering in a new era of productivity and innovation.
----- AWS takes the complexity out of innovating by providing a deep and broad set of partners, solutions, and services, as well as trusted security from the cloud to edge, so customers can continuously innovate and keep up with the pace of change. AWS cloud services include over 200 services from artificial intelligence and machine learning to analytics, compute, networking, and storage that our customers and partners can assemble to build any type of solutions.
----- There are a wide variety of use cases and verticals where customers are using Cloud computing to become more agile, innovate faster and save costs. AWS primarily supports Consumer, Industrial & Manufacturing, Connected Vehicle, Commercial & Smart Buildings, and Public Sector, Smart Cities, and transportation.
Â
------ Specifically, for the public sector, smart cities, and transportation, customers are looking to improve operations, deliver better services to citizens, increase productivity of their teams, and become more resilient.
---- At AWS we work backward from customers, and look for every opportunity to build and improve our products, services and initiatives that support them in achieving their mission. We heard from customers and partners, the need to run scalable and interoperable platforms to connect heterogeneous sources. This brought us to engage and support the FIWARE ecosystem in 2020 and then join the FIWARE Foundation to develop a joint roadmap that will allow us to achieve long-term business goals, while also creating new open-source solutions using open standards, standardized APIs and data models.
---- By joining forces to develop interoperable smart solutions for our customers, we bring the operational excellence of AWS to the vibrant FIWARE ecosystem - gathering more than 600 members (including AWS partners like Deloitte, Atos, Red Hat and NEC and customers like the city of Madinah).
----- With millions of active monthly customers and over 100,000 partners across 150 countries, we leverage the network effect and offer the world's most extensive cloud infrastructure, boasting 99 availability zones in 31 geographic regions. Our cloud platform is the most comprehensive and widely adopted, providing over 200 fully featured services in compute, storage, analytics, machine learning, and IoT. All of this is backed by a deep set of cloud security tools with 300 security, compliance, and governance services and features. All 117 AWS services that store customer data come with built-in encryption capabilities.
----- We pulled all of this together to develop the Smart Territory Framework for our customers and partners. The Smart Territory Framework, also referred to as âSTFâ, is an open-source framework that makes it easier and faster to create and operate interoperable platforms, in-line with global industry standards that leverage the open-source offering of FIWARE.
Â
----- STF supports the development and integration of smart and efficient solutions across multiple domains such as Smart Cities, Campuses and Regions; Energy and Utilities; Agriculture; Smart Building; and Manufacturing.
Â
----- It was developed to help our customers solve 3 main challenges that prevented them from collecting data and gaining the insights needed to innovate and provide efficient services that improve the lives of their residents:
Breaking down data silos
Enabling platform interoperability
Decoupling data producers from data consumers
---- Open source and available on github, we made it very easy to deploy. Only two lines of command and half an hour later, customers can start building their smart and interoperable solutions at scale using the STF.
---- So the Smart Territory Framework helps organizations to break down data silos WITHIN organizations The next step for cities to be more data-driven is through the use of Data Spaces with AWS: they will allow multiple city actors to share data, in a secure and trusted way, to break data siloes ACROSS organizations. A city for example could facilicate the sharing of energy data from housing through a federated infrastruture data with energy providers, grid operators and innovative start-ups to improve the energy systems within cities and foster the usage of renewable energies.
---- We started working on data spaces to solve 3 challenges that prevented our customers from exchanging data with other organizations:
Breaking down data silos across city stakeholders
Maintaining trust and data sovereignty over shared data assets
Enabling interoperability across cloud infrastructures
---- Today, cities can implement a Minimum Viable Data Spaces (MVDS) using an AWS STFÂ Data Space module including the FIWARE Data Space technology building blocks.
---- AWS and the AWS Partner Network have the technical expertise to support their customers in doing so, thus unlocking the full potential of data spaces
---- Now letâs look at a couple of customer projects that we have been working on since the last FIWARE Summit. A good example is the Government of Monaco. They wanted to focus on two priority areas, mobility and resilience. They wanted to anticipate natural disaster such as tsunamis, and improve the emergency response.
--- To implement their platform, one of their requirements and challenges was that they had to comply with the local data residency rule, which prevents some data to leave the country. Thanks to the flexibility of the STF, they could deploy some modules on-premises, and leverage the power of Cloud computing for other modules, such as for data ingestion and transformation, and device management.
---- An additional illustration of innovative solutions can be found in the Naxos Smart Island Project. This project focuses on enhancing mobility, primary healthcare, and the transport of goods. Powered by the AWS Cloud, it utilizes cutting-edge technology to 'smarten' existing infrastructure, including tourist ports, the energy grid, and water management systems.--- The Naxos Smart Island project is built around the AWS Smart Territory Framework, which seamlessly integrates AWS services with global industry standards and open-source offerings from the FIWARE ecosystem. This framework ensures the maximum benefit for Naxos citizens by enabling secure and straightforward sharing of non-personally identifiable information (PII) data among government departments and external organizations.
---- Finally, here is an example of a startup partner we met a few months ago, during the Smart City World Congress in Barcelona. Metaworldx built a city-scale digital twin for the city of Toronto using the STF. Within just a few hours they were able to integrate new sources of data to their solution â which shows how easy it is to build on top of the STF.
Â
----- It should be emphasized that solutions like these are made possible by partners like Metaworldx, Deloitte, Atos, NEC, and Red Hat. Establishing and leveraging an ecosystem of partners and solution providers, ranging from small and local companies to large global enterprises, is a crucial element of our smart territory strategy. This allows us to engage with a diverse group of stakeholders and solution providers to securely exchange data across various departments and with external organizations.
---- Thank you for your time and attention today! I invite you to come and meet our AWS team present at the event, and attend the different sessions we will be delivering.
