2. Introduction
My name is Ezequiel Barros, i am from Brazil.
This lesson is for week 2 of “Introduction to Music
Production” at coursera.org and i will teach you
about editing imperfect audio performance to correct
it’s timing.
3. Introduction
This week we covered the basic, yet important
fundamental editing features that are found across
multiple DAWs.
These editing features are part of a workflow
foundation that will most likely become second
nature.
4. Lesson
What if during the creative recording process, we
were able to streamline our efforts and spend less
time rehearsing and more time writing?
What if you didn’t have to record multiple takes
because you keep messing up the timing?
When i’m recording audio and midi i like to lay ideas
as quickly as possible, loop them and keep layering
more ideas, expanding the music itself.
So, having to stop and delete a mistimed recording
and starting again, almost kills the process.
5. Quantization
So what we can do to ensure that our songwriting
sessions last more than 30 seconds of recording?
Quantization.
Basically, quantization takes mistimed notes in the
performance and lines them up to a grid,
“precisioning” the imprecision.
Now I will show how it’s done in Ableton Live 9.
6. 1. Record your
offbeat midi or
audio signal
2. Right click the
grid
And choose
quantize, see
screenshot to the
right.
7. Quantization
There are two options presented to you, Quantize
and Quantize settings.
Depending on how you want to line up things to the
grid, or how your grid is already set(most of the time
I work in 1/16), you can just click quantize and
magic!
Otherwise, choose Quantize settings(see screenshot
in the next slide) and select your amount of
Quantization.
8. Ableton inserts the
yellow markers as
seen on the left(this is
when you quantize
audio).
This is where the
DAW has guessed
where the signals
should be moved in
order to line up to the
grid and fix any kind
of precision errors
9. Conclusion
In my own projects i will normally start off finger
tapping a beat, and during the record I will almost
mistime at least one hit.
Using Quantization i can quickly correct the loop and
continue on.
Is there anything that i missed or could have
explained better?
Thanks for your time, feedback is always appreciated!
