3. Internet Literacy
It's no secret that more and more the internet is becoming an integral part of our
everyday lives.
But if you are new to the online experience, it may be a bit overwhelming. You may be
wondering, "What exactly is the internet, and how does it work?“
In this lesson, we will give a brief overview of the internet, and we will talk about some
fundamental concepts such as networks, servers, and clients.
4. Internet
The internet is the largest computer network in the world, connecting millions
of computers.
A network is a group of two or more computer systems linked together.
It allows exchange of information between two or more computers on a
network.
It has become mandatory for day-to-day activities: bills payment, online
shopping and
surfing, tutoring, working, communicating with peers, etc.
5.
6. Types of Internet (Computer Networks)
There are two main types of computer networks:
Local Area Network (LAN): A LAN is two or more connected computers
sharing certain resources in a relatively small geographic location, often in the
same building. Examples include home networks and office networks.
7. Wide Area Network (LAN): A WAN typically consists of two or more LANs. The
computers are farther apart and are linked by telephone lines, dedicated
telephone lines, or radio waves.
The internet is the largest Wide Area Network (WAN) in existence
8.
9. Types of Internet Connections
Broadband
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
Cable
Wireless
Cellular
Satellite
10. Servers and Clients
A server is a computer that "serves" many different computers in a network by
running specialized software and storing information. For example, web
pages are stored on servers.
When you access a web page, your computer is acting as a client.
11. The World Wide Web (WWW)
Think of your phone as a car and the internet as a map 🚗
The internet is a digital highway made up of words, sounds, images and video
that lead to any source of info you’re looking for 👀
You’re part of 3.6 billion people using the Internet right now! 😮
In the same way a car won’t come to life without petrol, the internet needs data
or a working connection.
How you connect is simple 🤠 You can either:
12. When most people think of the internet, the first thing they think about is the
World Wide Web
Nowadays, the terms "internet" and "World Wide Web" are often used
interchangeably—but they're actually not the same thing.
The internet is the physical network of computers all over the world.
The World Wide Web is a virtual network of web sites connected by
hyperlinks (or "links").
Web sites are stored on servers on the internet, so the World Wide Web is a
part of the internet.
13. Layers of the Web
There are three layers of web
1. Surface Web
2. Deep Web
3. Dark Web
17. Social Media
The term social has various definitions. More prominently it refers to a characteristic of
living beings related to their interaction.
From the other end, media refers to be the main means of mass communication.
Collectively these words bring out a new word called social media. Social media has
been defined in diverged ways by various social scientists.
The befitting definition that best suits the current topic is:
Internet-based software and interfaces that allow individuals to interact with one
another, exchanging details about their lives such as biographical data, professional
information, personal photos and up-to-the-minute thoughts
18. Significances of Social Media
Social media has become very significant because of the two most important and
precise characteristics of social media.
They are: ubiquity and interactivity.
Ubiquity: Ubiquity is the sense that new media technologies affect everyone in the
societies they are employed, even if everyone in the society may not be the audience of
such a media.
Interactivity: The second significant issue that distinguishes new media from
traditional mass media channels and content is the persistent sagacity of interactivity
associated with new media channels, that is, the selectivity and reach that media
technologies offer users in their choices of information sources and interaction with
other people
