Introduction
Cummins is a global engine manufacturer that also designs and
manufactures turbochargers for engine applications. Cummins
Turbocharger is the market leader in medium and heavy-duty
car applications worldwide.
The Process and Relevant Data Comment by Seon A
Levius: Since you are using “Cummins” in this section, you
need to pinpoint some process problem with data issues for
optimization. The optimization or improvement can be for both
the process and technology.
Prototype - A Model of the Construction Process: The
organization's prototyping process is ineffective and results in a
lengthier lead time in comparison to client needs. According to
data from the last six months, the average lead time for proto-
sample building is approaching 12 days, rather than the five
days requested by the customer.
Process Improvement Methods Comment by Seon A Levius: In
this section you will basically explain how you will improve the
process problem you identified above. This is basically the
articulation of your solution (which must for this case include
technology optimization). Also, how will you evaluate it.
You mentioned Six Sigma as the tool to enhance the process.
But that is not what we want here. Six Sigma can be the tool
you used to evaluate the proposed solution to the problem you
identified.
So, in this sense, I didn’t see any articulation about how you
will evaluate your improvements to ensure, they are efficient
and effective.
For example, Six Sigma can be used as the process improvement
method. The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control
(DMAIC) sub-methodology within Six Sigma can be helpful in
defining the details of the future state process and Key
Performance Indicators (KPIs) that the future state process
should be able to meet.
Other methods in our reading this week that can be explored
includes PDCA (Plan Do Check Act).
Six Sigma is a technique for process improvement. Six sigma
methodology is being designed for process improvement and the
implementation of six sigma tools in order to correctly assess
the process and achieve improvement (Thomas, et al., 2017)
The following format explains the problem statement and
execution of the process improvement method.
Problem Statement
Articulate your problem statement here
Problem Statement Worksheet
Original problem or focus question
The lead time for the proto sample process is longer than anticip
ated by the customer.
12 days rather than 5.
Stakeholders who are most affected by the problem
The Customer prototyping team and the Company program mana
gement team are the most impacted by this issue.
Type of Problem
Problems with resources and processes Comment by Seon A
Levius: Technology has to be one of the problems
Suspected cause of the problem
Suspected reasons based on the cross functional team's root caus
e analysis are as follows.
1.Because the process is dependent on multiple individuals/func
tions, it results in a lengthier lead time.
2. Full-time resources are unavailable, and part-
time resources are unable to devote sufficient time to these requ
irements due to their normal work
3. Excessive employee involvement in everyday work.
4. The system's procedures and formalities are extensive.
5. Inadequate planning of prototyping samples.
This is a result of unexpected requirements.
Goal for improvement and long-term impact
The project's objective is to design a method for producing prot
o samples in a 5-day lead time to fulfill client expectations.
Comment by Seon A Levius: Peter Drucker, a famous
management writer, once said that if you cannot measure
something, you cannot manage it. How are you going to
measure whether these goals are attained? I would call your
goals here critical success factors (CSFs)
Your goals should be written as key performance indicators
(KPIs). So, the goals should be quantifiable metrics that can be
used to evaluate progress toward critical success factors (CSFs).
KPIs are far more specific than CSFs.
See the example in the Problem Statement template. These are
written as KPIs:
1. Increase quality for claims calls from 95% to 99%
2. Reduce average handling time by 30%
3. Reduce call center operating cost by 10%
What data points will you used to measure the progress of your
improvements?
In Topic 3, we will deal with “Defining and Measuring a
Process.” One of the learning outcomes for this topic is
“Determine appropriate key performance indicators (KPI) for
measuring process improvements.”
You can read pages 37 to 38 in the Chapter 2 handout I
provided to understand CSFs and KPIs
Impact to Stakeholders
1. The customer will be pleased to receive the sample within the
anticipated lead time.
2. Program management will be pleased, since their project will
go according to plan.
3. The development team will be pleased with the availability of
a proto sample for testing purposes during the project's develop
ment.
Proposal for addressing the problem
The issue will be resolved with the use of the following options:
Comment by Seon A Levius: Where is the technology
optimization to improve the business process? This should have
been identified and articulated under the section, “Process
Improvement Methods and Evaluating the Process and Data”
1. Resources will be added to ensure that the requirement can be
met on an as-needed basis.
2. The system's formality will be optimized to facilitate the sam
ple processing.
Final problem statement
At the conclusion, the procedure is optimized and enhanced.
The technique is capable of completing the prototyping of a sam
ple within the customer's anticipated lead times.
The issue will be resolved as a result of the aforementioned acti
vities.

Dear Felicitas,
Thanks for your submission and I appreciate your effort. I am
returning this assignment to you. Please review the “John Doe
Sample” I provided in the announcement area and follow that
format.Please include all subheadings
Please note that your document should include the following
sections:
· An introduction to the organization.
· An evaluation of the process and relevant data.
· An overview of the process improvement methods and tools
used to evaluate the process and data.
· A clear and concise problem statement based upon the
"Problem Statement Worksheet" template.
Plus, the Problem Statement Worksheet
We must get this first assignment right. The reason I am
reinforcing this is because you will have to expand on these
areas for later assignments, so if I don’t see them now, it’s
going to be painful to think about them later. I’ve seen many
students struggle with this. You have to read ahead as all these
assignments are connected.
Note the following:
You have to use an example for a company (you are using
“Cummins”) that has a business process problem, where data
might be the issue.
For instance:
1. TheProcess Problem and Relevant Data
Find some business process in an organization (you are using
“Cummins”) that is currently being done manually and explain
it.
2. Process Improvement Methods and Tools
The solution could be to use automation (some software
application), which would make the process more efficient and
effective. The automation part would be the technology
optimization aspect of the improvement to the process you
identified. Next, explain how you will evaluate that process
improvement to ensure it is being both efficient and effective.
Note: When you get to assignment 2, you see that you have to
address the following question:
B) What information differs from process improvement to
technology optimization when creating the workflow? Here you
have to separate the business process improvement from the
technology optimization in your workflow. Note the differences.
What is process improvement? What is technology
optimization?
My best
This assignment asks you to introduce an audience of novel

Problem Statement
Introduction to Hampton City Schools
Hampton City Schools is a medium-sized school district that
puts a significant emphasis
on technology. The Technology Department supports 20,000
devices across thirty-six buildings.
Devices include Apple and Dell computers, ChromeBooks,
Promethean boards and projectors,
printers, and iPads. The department consists of forty-eight
employees (Carper, 2018). They
maintain the infrastructure, student information systems, and all
equipment. All of the
equipment is tracked with barcodes that are listed in an asset
management system. The asset
management system is linked to a work order database, so
repairs are part of the asset record.
The Process and Relevant Data
The Technology Department uses an asset management system
to track all computers,
printers, iPads, ChromeBooks, and other equipment. The asset
management system is a record
of serial numbers, manufacturers, models, technical
specifications, purchase dates, assigned
barcodes, and work order history. The work order system
consists of requests from users for
repair work and is linked to items by barcode number.
The present system is configured and maintained by an off-site
vendor. The vendor
provides asset management and work order systems for many
companies and school systems.
The problem categories for work orders and classifications for
devices are not customizable for
the needs of Hampton City Schools. Also, reports need to be
run to track work order categories
and the age of machines to determine a replacement schedule.

Commented [DSL1]: This sentence appears
to be written in the passive voice. Please avoid writing
is passive voice.
Consider writing in the active voice.
The passive voice is not a grammatical error. It’s
a style choice. However, most readers prefer the active
voice. In a clause written in the active voice, the subject
of the clause performs the action. (I saw
Mom.) In a clause written in the passive voice, the
action is performed upon the subject of the
clause. (Mom was seen.)
The active voice can provide more clarity, brevity,
accountability, or certainty than the passive voice. If the
active voice makes sense, use it. However, the passive
voice may be more appropriate when the actor
is unimportant or unknown. (My bike was stolen.)
Passive:
The mayor was informed of the accounting errors.
Active:
Mr. Jones informed the mayor of the accounting
errors.
Passive:
My lunch was forgotten.
Active:
I forgot my lunch.
Passive:

Active:

PROBLEM STATEMENT 3
The addition of a new team member will make it possible for
the department to return to
an asset management and work order system that is created and
maintained on site. Changes and
additions can be made as needs arise.
Success will be measured through customer surveys sent to
users. Management will also
measure the improvement in their ability to run reports that are
needed and add customization to
the interface, as changes are required. This will result in better
tracking of equipment and fewer
losses. Irrelevant data will no longer be part of the records.
This will allow the technicians to
focus on the relevant data.
Problem Statement
The current work order database and asset management system
is costing $10,000 a year
and not providing the needed reports and customization. It will
be more beneficial to have a
system created in-house that can be altered as needed and
provide the reports that are required on
a regular basis. By creating the new database, the department
will have more control over
features and the ability to create a system that fully meets
department needs.

Please consider rewriting the sentence to remove the
unclear reference.
Pronouns such as he, she, they, that, and this are
words that stand in for other nouns. When using
pronouns, however, it’s important to make it clear
which nouns they are standing in for. When the original
noun (called the antecedent) appears several
sentences before the pronoun that replaces
it or doesn’t appear at all, readers may not understand
who or what the pronoun refers to.

Problem Statement Assignment
For this assignment, you will use this template to organize your
problem statement. This will help you identify your business
problem. The problem statement is an integral component that
will guide the remaining assignments in this course.
Directions for Problem Statement Worksheet
Original problem or focus question
Restate the initial problem that launched the inquiry process, or
rewrite the focus question or one of the clarifying question as a
statement.
Stakeholders who are most affected by the problem
Identify who is most directly impacted by this problem?
Alternately, who would benefit the most if this problem were
resolved?
Type of problem
For example, is the problem based upon skills, attitudes,
knowledge, resources, competition, defects, or something else.
Suspected cause(s) of the problem
Based on the data analysis and/or the root cause analysis, what
does the team think is the most significant cause(s) contributing
to this problem? What, if addressed, would make the greatest
impact on resolving the problem? Include specific evidence.
Goal for improvement and long-term impact
Describe the target for impact. The goal should be measurable.
Impact to Stakeholders
Describe possible impacts to stakeholders if the problem is not
addressed.
Proposal for addressing the problem
The proposal is a high-level strategy that represents promising
practices drawn from research, local knowledge, and local
expertise. Note sources, if possible, when presenting this
information. This proposal will become the basis for subsequent
action planning.
Final problem statement
Tie the above statements into 3–5 coherent sentences that could
be easily understood by a wide range of stakeholders.
Sample Problem Statement Worksheet
Original problem or focus question
· The claims processing call center representatives are not
accurately capturing claim information and taking too long on
the calls
Stakeholders who are most affected by the problem
· External customers
· Call Center Operations
· Call Center Representatives
Claims Processors (Back-office)
Impact to Stakeholders
· Loss of customers and revenue
· Customer dissatisfaction
· Lower performance evaluations for representatives
· High operations cost
Delays in claims due to rework
Type of problem
Skills, Process and Technology
Suspected cause(s) of the problem
· Call center representatives do not receive adequate training
· The current technology requires manual entry of information
and does not drive claims representatives to ask appropriate
questions
Standard operating procedures are not automated into process .
Goal for improvement and long-term impact
· Increase quality for claims calls from 95% to 99%
· Reduce Average handling time by 30%
Reduce call center operating cost by 10%
Proposal for addressing the problem
· Automate standard operating procedures into the online claims
filing process
Reduce manual data entry for claim filing process
Final problem statement
Many call center representatives are not achieving quality and
call time standards; thereby contributing to the overall low
quality rating of 95% for the call center and Average Handling
Time for Claims Filing Calls of 650 seconds. Through data and
process evaluation, it was determined that the process required
90% manual data entry of claims information. In addition, the
online tools available to the call center representatives are not
updated frequently with procedural changes and do not contain
all required information necessary for representatives to
perform their job. The low quality over the past 6 months has
resulted in a 2% decrease in customers and $550,000 loss in
annual revenue. The high average handling time has increased
operating cost by $250,000 monthly.

  • 1. 1 Grand Canyon University Instructor Name: MIS-652 Business Process Analysis December 1, 2021 Introduction Cummins is a global engine manufacturer that also designs and manufactures turbochargers for engine applications. Cummins Turbocharger is the market leader in medium and heavy-duty car applications worldwide. The Process and Relevant Data Comment by Seon A Levius: Since you are using “Cummins” in this section, you need to pinpoint some process problem with data issues for optimization. The optimization or improvement can be for both the process and technology. Prototype - A Model of the Construction Process: The organization's prototyping process is ineffective and results in a lengthier lead time in comparison to client needs. According to data from the last six months, the average lead time for proto- sample building is approaching 12 days, rather than the five days requested by the customer. Process Improvement Methods Comment by Seon A Levius: In this section you will basically explain how you will improve the process problem you identified above. This is basically the articulation of your solution (which must for this case include technology optimization). Also, how will you evaluate it. You mentioned Six Sigma as the tool to enhance the process. But that is not what we want here. Six Sigma can be the tool
  • 2. you used to evaluate the proposed solution to the problem you identified. So, in this sense, I didn’t see any articulation about how you will evaluate your improvements to ensure, they are efficient and effective. For example, Six Sigma can be used as the process improvement method. The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) sub-methodology within Six Sigma can be helpful in defining the details of the future state process and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that the future state process should be able to meet. Other methods in our reading this week that can be explored includes PDCA (Plan Do Check Act). Six Sigma is a technique for process improvement. Six sigma methodology is being designed for process improvement and the implementation of six sigma tools in order to correctly assess the process and achieve improvement (Thomas, et al., 2017) The following format explains the problem statement and execution of the process improvement method. Problem Statement Articulate your problem statement here Problem Statement Worksheet Original problem or focus question The lead time for the proto sample process is longer than anticip ated by the customer. 12 days rather than 5. Stakeholders who are most affected by the problem
  • 3. The Customer prototyping team and the Company program mana gement team are the most impacted by this issue. Type of Problem Problems with resources and processes Comment by Seon A Levius: Technology has to be one of the problems Suspected cause of the problem Suspected reasons based on the cross functional team's root caus e analysis are as follows. 1.Because the process is dependent on multiple individuals/func tions, it results in a lengthier lead time. 2. Full-time resources are unavailable, and part- time resources are unable to devote sufficient time to these requ irements due to their normal work 3. Excessive employee involvement in everyday work. 4. The system's procedures and formalities are extensive. 5. Inadequate planning of prototyping samples. This is a result of unexpected requirements. Goal for improvement and long-term impact The project's objective is to design a method for producing prot o samples in a 5-day lead time to fulfill client expectations. Comment by Seon A Levius: Peter Drucker, a famous management writer, once said that if you cannot measure something, you cannot manage it. How are you going to measure whether these goals are attained? I would call your goals here critical success factors (CSFs) Your goals should be written as key performance indicators (KPIs). So, the goals should be quantifiable metrics that can be used to evaluate progress toward critical success factors (CSFs). KPIs are far more specific than CSFs. See the example in the Problem Statement template. These are written as KPIs:
  • 4. 1. Increase quality for claims calls from 95% to 99% 2. Reduce average handling time by 30% 3. Reduce call center operating cost by 10% What data points will you used to measure the progress of your improvements? In Topic 3, we will deal with “Defining and Measuring a Process.” One of the learning outcomes for this topic is “Determine appropriate key performance indicators (KPI) for measuring process improvements.” You can read pages 37 to 38 in the Chapter 2 handout I provided to understand CSFs and KPIs Impact to Stakeholders 1. The customer will be pleased to receive the sample within the anticipated lead time. 2. Program management will be pleased, since their project will go according to plan. 3. The development team will be pleased with the availability of a proto sample for testing purposes during the project's develop ment. Proposal for addressing the problem The issue will be resolved with the use of the following options: Comment by Seon A Levius: Where is the technology optimization to improve the business process? This should have been identified and articulated under the section, “Process Improvement Methods and Evaluating the Process and Data” 1. Resources will be added to ensure that the requirement can be met on an as-needed basis. 2. The system's formality will be optimized to facilitate the sam
  • 5. ple processing. Final problem statement At the conclusion, the procedure is optimized and enhanced. The technique is capable of completing the prototyping of a sam ple within the customer's anticipated lead times. The issue will be resolved as a result of the aforementioned acti vities. References Thomas, A., Antony, J., Haven-Tang, C., Francis, M., & Fisher, R. (2017). Implementing Lean Six Sigma into curriculum design and delivery–a case study in higher education. International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management. Dear Felicitas, Thanks for your submission and I appreciate your effort. I am returning this assignment to you. Please review the “John Doe Sample” I provided in the announcement area and follow that format. Please include all subheadings Please note that your document should include the following sections: · An introduction to the organization. · An evaluation of the process and relevant data. · An overview of the process improvement methods and tools used to evaluate the process and data. · A clear and concise problem statement based upon the "Problem Statement Worksheet" template. Plus, the Problem Statement Worksheet We must get this first assignment right. The reason I am reinforcing this is because you will have to expand on these areas for later assignments, so if I don’t see them now, it’s
  • 6. going to be painful to think about them later. I’ve seen many students struggle with this. You have to read ahead as all these assignments are connected. Note the following: You have to use an example for a company (you are using “Cummins”) that has a business process problem, where data might be the issue. For instance: 1. TheProcess Problem and Relevant Data Find some business process in an organization (you are using “Cummins”) that is currently being done manually and explain it. 2. Process Improvement Methods and Tools The solution could be to use automation (some software application), which would make the process more efficient and effective. The automation part would be the technology optimization aspect of the improvement to the process you identified. Next, explain how you will evaluate that process improvement to ensure it is being both efficient and effective. Note: When you get to assignment 2, you see that you have to address the following question: B) What information differs from process improvement to technology optimization when creating the workflow? Here you have to separate the business process improvement from the technology optimization in your workflow. Note the differences. What is process improvement? What is technology optimization? My best

The Process and Relevant Data The Technology Department uses an asset management system to track all computers, printers, iPads, ChromeBooks, and other equipment. The asset management system is a record of serial numbers, manufacturers, models, technical specifications, purchase dates, assigned barcodes, and work order history. The work order system consists of requests from users for repair work and is linked to items by barcode number. The present system is configured and maintained by an off-site vendor. The vendor provides asset management and work order systems for many companies and school systems. The problem categories for work orders and classifications for devices are not customizable for the needs of Hampton City Schools. Also, reports need to be run to track work order categories and the age of machines to determine a replacement schedule. Process Improvement Methods and Evaluating the Process and Data
