The tonsils are small glands in the throat that help fight infection in children. When tonsils become infected with viruses or bacteria, they isolate the infection to prevent it from spreading. The main symptom of tonsillitis is a sore throat, along with fever, cough, headache, ear pain, swollen lymph nodes, and yellow spots on the tongue. Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by viruses like those that cause colds, influenza, laryngitis, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease. Bacterial tonsillitis can be caused by streptococcus bacteria and may lead to more severe symptoms than viral tonsillitis.
