19. School BoardHi. I’m Mike Kernell and I want to be your District 9 School Board Member.
I’m concerned about our public school system and I want to make sure every student has the
opportunity to excel. I constantly hear from parents and educators that the schools are “over-testing”
and that they are simply “teaching to take tests.” Let’s work together to get our kids excited about
learning and prepare them to think, rather than just take tests.
During my tenure as a State Legislator, I always made education my priority. As your School Board
Member I will be your voice at the School Board. I attended school in District 9. I want to work with
constituents, parents, students, and educators to move our kids into the right direction. Your
concerns will be my agenda!
• Mike was a State Legislator for over 35 years.
• Mike attended public schools in District 9.
• The Shelby County school system is a $1 Billion operation.
• Mike was Chair of the TN House Government Operations Committee.
He has lots of experience working with many public and private
organizations of all sizes, developing budgets and policies.
• As Committee Chair, Mike’s job was to conduct regular reviews of
State rules & regulations, and along with the Office of the
Comptroller, conduct Performance Audits of State agencies.
