This document compares and contrasts two instructional design models: the ADDIE model and the Dick & Carey model. The ADDIE model is a five-stage model that includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The Dick & Carey model is a comprehensive model that provides guidance through each step of the design process and emphasizes formative evaluation. Both models recognize the importance of determining learners' prior knowledge and establishing clear learning objectives. A key difference is that the ADDIE model is more flexible while the Dick & Carey model requires all steps to be completed sequentially.
2. FIRST THINGS FIRST!
What is Instructional Design?
It is a delivery system for a learning experience
It helps gain participants skills and knowledge
It follows various theories and models related
to how people learn
3.
4. ADDIE MODEL UNCOVERED
Analysis: The designer has to identify the learning obstacles, goals & objectives,
audience needs, existing knowledge & characteristics.
Design: Consideration of the learning environment, constraints, delivery options
and timeline; specifying learn objectives.
Develop: Creation of content and learning materials based on the design.
Implementation: The action of the design is carried out following procedures.
Evaluation: There are two kinds of Evaluations, Formative, process of design
curriculum, and Summative, test designed for criterion related items and
opportunities for feedback.
5. ADDIE’S PRO’s & CON’S
Advantages
Flexibility: Allows for change to varying circumstances
Easily modifiable: In the ADDIE Model, we can easily modify the changes.
Used in other or different models: We also easily use the same ADDIE Model in the different
models.
Disadvantages
Linear: Every phase is having its dependency on the previous phase.
Too detailed: The method, planning and process are too detailed and lengthy.
Time consuming: It will consume a huge amount of time for building the project.
8. DICK & CAREY MODEL PRO’s & CON’S
Advantage:
It is comprehensive and detailed which diminishes the chance of missteps.
It provides guidance through the design.
Flexibility for adjustments
Disadvantages:
Each part of the component is vital and none can be skipped
Mastery of objectives or skills before progression within the system may create
difficulty when delivering instruction to a small group.
9. Compare & Contrast
Both models are widely known
Recognize the need to determine
what the learner already knows
Distinguish the importance of
establishing desired goals/outcomes
in the learning process
Bothe models focus on the input, the
output and the process of curriculum
design
Addie model is flexible while D&C model
isn’t
Addie consist of 5 steps where as D&C
Model as more
In Addie evaluation is done at the end
whereas in D7C Model it is done
throughout.
