Argonautsand sailedin the quest for theGolden Fleece to Colchis.Demetriaswas established
by Demetrius Poliorcetes,King ofMacedonia, in 293/92BC.In 197 BC Romans annexed
Demetrias.
To thewest ofVolosthere arethe Neolithicsettlements ofDimini witha ruined acropolis,walls
and two beehivetombs
dated between 4000-1200BCand Sesklo with theremains ofthe oldestacropolisin Greece
(6000BC),aswell as thefoundationsofa palaceand mansions,amongthe mosttypical
examples of Neolithiccivilisation.
During Byzantineempire, emperor JustinianI in 551 fortifiedPaleahill.In 1423 Ottomans
annexed Volos.Volosduring theOttomanempirewas a hamlet,buildon thehill in Palea
district. Thehillwas fortifiedwithwalls.Todayjust afew parts ofthe wallscan beseen near the
Tsalapatabuilding.
6. After its annexationto Greece fromtheOttomanEmpirein 1881, it hada populationofonly
4,900butrapidlygrew withinthenext 4 decades. Houses were builtoutsidethewallsand the
main areaof Volosbythe sea wasbuiltup. Merchants, businessmen, craftsmen and sailors
moved toVolosfrom thesurrounding area.
