4. Simon recovers from his fainting and goes to the mountain.
He sees the decaying body of the dead parachutist and
decides to go down and inform the others of his discovery
that the beast is harmless.
Ralph and Piggy are bathing and wondering what to do. A
storm is coming, they notice the others have gone and
decide that it might be necessary to join them.
They arrive and see Jack sitting almost like a king on a make
shift throne. He orders someone to give them meat.
After the meal Jack asks who will join his tribe, listing his
skills of safety and meat, Ralph argues with him, but then the
storm starts.
Jack encourages his tribe to do the dance, they begin to do
the chant and re-enact the hunt.
As this is taking place they notice Simon in the distance and
immediately attack believing it to be the beast.
Simon as he dies screams something of a dead man but it is
too late. His body is left to be washed out with the tide.
The parachute is blown pulling the body of the dead man off
the mountain.
As Simon’s washes out, there is a phosphorous presence in
the sea which surrounds him.
Key Points:
In fulfilment of the Lord of the flies’ prophecy Simon is killed
by everyone on the island, including Ralph and Piggy
although not intentionally.
The exit of the beast from the top of the mountain and the
death of Simon prevent the truth about the beast from being
presented to the group and instead gives a stronger point for
Jack who now uses the threat of violence to gain control of
his group.
The pointless death of Simon shows his presence in the
story as that of a martyr. He is one of the sensible children
and understands the potential for violence in each of the
children. His death whilst trying to stop the fear and chaos of
the beats only serves to take away the innocence of the
remaining children and leads to the death of Piggy.
