3. Writing is one of the most
powerful medium of
communication. Over the
centuries, writers have always
been used this medium with to
entertain and share human
experience through the art of
poetics & storytelling.

4. 40.000 years ago, writing made its first appearance in the form of
cave paintings. They were not merely decorations of animals and
living areas, but human beings really gave life to a new way of
communication.

5. It is only around 3000 BC that the
first paper-based document was
created. Made from the pith of
the most important aquatic plant
of the Nile of Egypt, Papyrus
revolutionised the written
communication.

6. So between the 14th and 15th century The writing process became
a full-time activity, thanks to the patient work of the amanuensis,
the monks who transcribed books.

Hopefully, around 1440
Gutenberg invented the printing
press through the use of existing
screw presses. He introduced a
movable undertable on which
the sheets could be swiftly
changed.

8. In modern times technology introduced significant changes linked
to the writing. The typewriter, invented in 1867, speed up the work
in offices. A man could write down 120 words per minute.

9. Adriano Olivetti was the symbol of this change. He was a dreamer
entrepreneur who believed that a typewriter was not only a simple
object. It could have the spirit of innovation for an entire
generation.

10. In 1950 Olivetti created the most famous typewriter in the world,
the “lettera 22. A new concept of entrepreneurship was born that
year within a new concept of beauty.

11. Lettera 22 received immediately a great success. It conquered the
public of the whole world. In the 1960s it was present in some
studio of famous writers as Montanelli, Pasolini and Leonard
Cohen.

12. The creation of Adriano Olivetti was awarded by important
institutions as Illinois institute of technology and The moma of New
York. Today is possible to find lettera 22 in the design collection.

13. Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory
or performing artefacts. There is a place where all of these
activities are incredibly performed together. It is Venice where
writing and architecture are destined to be bound forever.

14. In 1956, Carlo Scarpa, a well-
renowned venetian architect
won the Olivetti Architecture
Awards. Following the
prizegiving, Mr. Olivetti
commissioned the architect to
design the first Olivetti
showroom.

15. Opened in 1958 in Venice, Scarpa transformed the space provided
to him from a dark alley into an open jewel box. The resulting
showroom, is an outstanding artwork used as a display space for
Olivetti products.

16. The space was used for decades by Olivetti before changing
owners. However, in 2011 Scarpa’s Olivetti Showroom re-emerged
once again as an historical building, where Scarpa’s design and
Olivetti’s authentic typewriters have become a museum.

17. Visiting the Negozio olivetti is really a nostalgic experience.
Everythings reminds the period of Olivetti manifacture. The
atmosphere of the space give to the visitor a sense of
peacefullness.

18. Scarpa wanted to give to the space an eternal connection with the
city of Venice. He used traditional venetian materials like the
marmorino and the square panels of glass placed along the
walkway of the upper floor.

19. Negozio Olivetti is a unique treasure. Visitors could enjoy the story
of Olivetti’s manufacture and the unicity of the Scarpa’s
architecture. A result of a meeting between a dreamer
businessman and a brilliant architect.
