1. Male, age 17:
1. What qualities do you like about thrillers? The gore and suspense of them.
2. What thriller film do you remember most and why? Films like Final Destination and any of
the Friday the 13th type films. Their story lines are easy to follow and get into and you’re
always wondering what’s coming next so they keep you on your toes.
3. Is there anything you would like to see in a thriller? Maybe things I can relate to in life to
make it a bit more believable.
4. Why do you watch thrillers and where do you prefer to watch them? E.g. cinema, at home,
with friends… I watch them for something to do when I’m bored and normally at home but
I watch them in the cinema now and then.
5. Between the title sequences ‘Seven’ and ‘Final Destination 5’, which do you think better and
more memorable? Why? The one for ‘Final Destination 5’ is the better one as it gives you an
idea of the sort of things that will be happening. The titles being shown in the ‘Seven’
seemed too much of a generic pre-set and not really original or exciting.
Female, age 18:
1. What qualities do you like about a thriller film and why? I like the music because that’s what
makes you tense or relax throughout all of it.
2. What thriller film do you remember most and why? I like Silence of the Lambs and Red
Dragon because it has Doctor Hannibal Lector in it and he is just awesome. It’s more mind
games and there’s a lot more twists and turn.
3. Is there anything you would like to see in a thriller? Mind games. That’s what scares me the
most; that some people can actually think like that.
4. Why do you watch thrillers and where do you prefer to watch them? E.g. cinema, at home,
with friends… I watch them because I like being scared and I like to watch them at home
with friends because I enjoy their reactions.
5. Between the title sequences ‘Seven’ and ‘Final Destination 5’, which do you think is better
and more memorable? Why? I prefer the Final Destination 5 because it’s more colourful .
6. Does it help you remember the titles or give you an idea of what the film is about? Yes to
both because I lose interest easily and bright colours are just nice to look at and catch my
attention.
Female, age 17:
1. What qualities do you like about a thriller film and why? The tension and suspense because
it gets you more and more excited about what’s going to happen next. It keeps you
interested.
2. What thriller film do you remember most and why? Salt because I was hooked from the first
twist in the plot and continued to be until the end because the plot didn’t reveal itself
completely until the end. There were so many twists that I had to think about it afterwards,
therefore it stuck in my mind.
2. 3. Is there anything you would like to see in a thriller? The setting shouldn’t jump around too
much – by that I mean that it shouldn’t be set in too many places because with thrillers it
takes quite a bit of concentration to keep up with the plot. Also, I like a lot of twists, the end
of the film shouldn’t be predictable in any way.
4. Why do you watcht thrillers and where do you prefer to watch them? E.g. cinema, at home,
with friends… I like to watch them because I get tired of being able to predict the events of
plots in films and I don’t mind, just somewhere where my viewing experience won’t be
interrupted because with a thriller you kind of need to pay attention.
5. Between the title sequences ‘Seven’ and ‘Final Destination 5’, which do you think is better
and more memorable? Why? I prefer ‘Seven’ because it is a lot less repetitive; as well as that
the opening credits to ‘Final Destination 5’ won’t make much sense to people who haven’t
seen the four previous films. Whereas with ‘Seven’ the plot content is hinted to in an
obvious but not obvious way, meaning it all makes sense once you have seen it once.
Also, FD5 isn’t very memorable because it gets rather boring after a minute due to the fact
that it’s just various things smashing through invisible glass and ‘Seven’ is slightly repetitive
in the style it’s presented in, but it shows new content every now and then.
